Silly question, but what are 'rep points'?

I did actually attempt to search for this... but didn't come up with much actually explaining the system.

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I don't know what the rep point system is. Is it referring to the reaction scores?

"Hook me in 200 words or less, and maybe you'll earn a rep! Volume 2"

^This is the rep I am referring to BTW.

It comes from the old incarnation of AW. Rep points are likes, now.

YMMV. I prefer to use them a little sparingly, but I notice some people go overboard and... honestly, some of the usage feels a little clique-ish at times. However, I wouldn't necessarily think about it too much because it's not like one of the admins is going to come knocking at your door is you go over a "like" quota.
