They've been around for a good while, they have distribution (http://www.combook.co.uk/about.htm). I'd be interested in knowing what kind of sales their titles get.

I know someone who has published a series of westerns with them. He does pretty well out of the library lending rights

Hale specialises in publishing books for libraries. They pay small advances, only commit to small print runs, and will only reprint when they have orders for 100+ books in hand.

They are reputable and well thought of, but they are also notorious for producing strange covers--the book of a friend of mine had good, period illustration but with an amazingly bright purple background.

As I understand it, Hale's authors make more money from PLR than from advances and royalties.

I've been told today that Robert Hale has been bought out by a larger publisher, which has promised to honour outstanding contracts. Whether the Hale imprint will be kept, I don't know.

I borrowed dozens of this company's historical novels from my local library back in the 70s. Every single one of them seemed to have a cover featuring a woman who looked a bit like the model Verushka, all long tawny hair and dramatic eye makeup. It didn't matter in what time period the novel was set.
