Yeah, I know the routine ... But since I've been on LinkedIn, I've been getting a lot of people saying they'd like to publish my self-published short reads.

So, I'm asking: Has anyone every heard of Mundi Books of Madrid? I've looked at all the possible names from their email and didn't see it on the Publisher List.

Any experiences?

I got an email like that 2 weeks ago. Book Ediciones Muni/Verlag Mundi Book, with an address and phone in Madrid. Starting in the US per 2015. From the email address I found their website at www.mundibook.com.

They said they were looking for authors wanting to publish in either US or Spain. If you're well known, they pay the bills. If not, they pay half of the costs, for a 5 year contract and half of the profit.

They seemed bonafide, but I wasn't interested, so I just filed the email.

I've been approached by them too. I have a journalist/freelancer publisher friend in Spain who is checking them out.
So far they seem genuine, but it's early days.........

That likely means that most authors will have to pay, and must trust that whatever amount the publisher specifies is really half the cost (publishers that charge fees often make this claim only to make their fees seem more attractive; in reality, the author pays the whole freight and then some).

Royalties paid on profit need to be scrutinized carefully to see what costs are actually being deducted. Publishers can manipulate "profit" so that it winds up being a fairly small amount.

Also, are they looking to publish in English or in translation? I don't see that they've published any English-language books. If you have to pay for translation as well as production, the costs could be considerable.

The covers don't look great.

They claim to have 8 books in English, but I can't find any. I also can't find anything on the company owner, Magdelena Stroie.

I'm still researching.......

International woman of mystery Magdalena Stroie is also associated with this magazine:

Azayartmagazine.com

If the company really has published eight books in English they haven't bothered to mention them on their website or put them on Amazon. I think this alone should be enough for you to cross them off your list.

ETA: Stroie is a Romanian name. Could Ms Stroie be the woman mentioned on the website of the Consulate General of Romania in Bilbao?

What they're offering looks like a self-publishing package, complete with ineffective "marketing" services. My bet would still be that in most if not all cases, the author's share covers everything plus the publisher's overhead and profit. That's a good bit of money to pay for no editing, stock image cover art, and (apparently) no electronic version.

There's also the issue of how you verify that the number of books you thought you paid for actually were printed.
