Hey team, I had a question I was hoping to throw out to see where we all land.

Do you think poetry has to be always honest and true?

The question comes as I work on a poem that's difficult for me. It's about loss, grief, and the way life changes when experiencing these things. Metaphor features heavily, but there are some lines that reference memories of the narrator. Is it unethical for these memories not to be true memories to me? I have personal experiences that they're based on, or designed to replicate, but my own experiences are 1. too raw to include right now and/or 2. not particularly conducive to poetry portrayal.

So I thought I'd open it up for discussion/opinions here. How much do our poems need to be honest, or true?
