They're here: http://www.pineapplepress.com/index.html

I believe that they're going to ask an "accepted" author to pay
for publishing, although they claim to not be a
"print on demand" or a "vanity" publisher.

I talked to them a few years ago about just printing a book our writers' group
was putting out and when they realized we didn't want to "buy" editing or
artwork they lost interest in the project.

Anyone know anything about them?

I didn't see anything on the site about payment for eidting or art work. Was that something that came up in the contract?

Their emphasis on nonfiction books about Florida. They also take literary fiction,

From their site:
Almost all of our fiction is set in Florida. We also publish books about lighthouses.

Our only children’s books are on Florida topics for Florida schools. We publish a few Florida-related cookbooks. We do not publish genre fiction (mysteries, romances, science fiction, action/adventure, Westerns) unless they are strongly Florida-related.

I know what they say on their site. What I'm wondering is what they're not saying.
In the conversation I had with them a few years ago, they made it quite
clear that they wanted to be paid to edit and do artwork for a book. At the time
I had the clear impression that if they were going to "publish" your book, you'd be paying
for those kinds of services.

I gather no one has had any experience with them?

You could ask them directly again, to see if anything has changed. If they are 'pay to play', they are not advertising it openly.

I agree. I did find this while browsing around:

They say:
http://www.pineapplepress.com/contact.html

Please note that we are not a print-on-demand or vanity printer. We are a publishing house with a selective program focused (though not exclusively) on titles that relate to Florida.

But there was this:

Official News Releases
Ingram Publisher Services adds three new clients Australian Academic Press, Dark Coast Press, and Pineapple Press titles are now distributed by Ingram 6/30/2010
[…]
Pineapple Press, founded in 1982, is known for the regional titles published by the Press about Florida, including titles about the state’s history, folklore, art, gardening, nature and travel. Other specialty titles include books on lighthouses, and books on Georgia and the Carolinas.
“We’ve successfully used the print-on-demand services of Ingram’s Lightning Source for some time, helping us minimize inventory risk and improve our fill rate to our customers,” said David Cussen, owner, Pineapple Press. “Adding the services of Ingram Publisher Services was the next logical next step to increase sales of our titles”.

So certainly their web site is, ahem, not up to date.
IMHO, anyway.

In point of fact, using POD technology does not equal being a POD publisher. Virtually all publishers these days are using POD technology on their back lists.

I know nothing about this publisher and am not commenting on it, just clarifying that the two statements are not necessarily contradictory.

I had an experience with Pineapple Press shortly after they first started that was so bad, it's almost iconic...an encapsulation of just about every bad experience with publishers anyone has ever reported.

Thanks Axler. My experience was also several years ago. I was hoping someone had dealt with them recently. I guess not. Maybe I can find out more from someone who has had several books published with them recently. Since my instinct would be to say "what did you pay them?" I need to consider how to phrase the question in a more diplomatic fashion. Certainly she has used, um, been published by them, for several books which speaks of a good relationship.

Exactly. And this is why we all try very hard to use the proper terminology. It's Digital Printing, not POD, because it really isn't print on demand. It's simply a printing option that allows for smaller runs at a competitive price. Sorry to get off topic, but this POD thing really ruffles my Victoria Secrets because it creates so much confusion.
