In these times of oversimplification and rampant shallowness ( ;) ), which word would you use to describe a particular (or your) religion? Only normal words are allowed. For instance, you can't describe Buddhism by saying Buddha. Some explanation is allowed.

Oh, ofcourse you can react to words other people have chosen, but let's keep it nice.

I'll go first.

Christianity: Forgiveness.

First I thought of "sin", but that's only one side of the coin. I chose forgiveness, because sin is implied with that word.

I have a really bad feeling about the direction this thread might take, based on previous experiences, and I'm going to lock this until ColoradoGuy can make a decision.

(I really just don't want to seem members riled by what I realize is intended as harmless amusement, but which might not be treated that way)

I'm opening this back up, but will be watching.

It might be interesting. Of course right off it seems to me that categories such as "Christian" can be so broad as to be uninformative.

Yes, I think so too but as long as we keep things nice and civil and accept the same words (eg forgiveness) can apply to other religions. After all, religion is and has always been an explosive subject.

These are just some thoughts from an unapologetic, shallow atheist.

Christianity: Goal

By goal, I mean that most Christians strive to be more like Jesus, and even though we often fail, the attempt is usually still there.

Not shallow thoughts, good ones.

Cool, the thread has opened!

Of course right off it seems to me that categories such as "Christian" can be so broad as to be uninformative.

Indeed, I'm going to refine it by saying:

The Dutch Reformed Church: forgiveness

Whenever there is a get together it is always a potluck no matter how many are gathered.

I like that.
