Welcome! :)

This is a thread open to anyone who wants to build a long-term writing habit! That could include writing, editing, research, or anything else that supports your writing, like self-care or just putting bread on the table.

By sharing your efforts here you'll get some accountability to help boost your motivation, and you'll be part of a community of fellow habit-builders who encourage and support each other!

:snoopy:

Feel free to start the month out by stating your goals. When you report in, you can also take the opportunity to chat a little with the other participants, offering words of encouragement, ideas, or advice!

A few things I ask that you keep in mind:*
  • To avoid clutter, please only post once per day.
  • It's always nice to offer a few words of encouragement to others! :)
  • But don't feel bad if you don't have the time or energy to interact with everyone.
  • Please remember that no one is obliged to follow or even respond to any advice you offer.
  • Ultimately, it's up to each person how they wish to participate!

GOOD LUCK!

/Magnus

*I am not an admin or moderator on these forums, so all I can do is ask nicely. ;)

TIPS FOR BUILDING A (WRITING) HABIT

1. Set Achievable Goals

This is probably the most important part. Too often people set goals they have no chance of hitting, then get discouraged when they fail and give up. Be realistic. You need goals that you can reliably reach more often than not. Hitting a smaller goal will give you a confidence boost and set you up for success the next day, building momentum. A good goal is a little bit challenging but doesn't overwhelm you. If you find yourself failing your goal regularly, lower the bar.

A lofty long-term goal might be fine, but if you aren't currently getting much writing done, a goal to write 3000 words per day isn't something you can expect to achieve within weeks or even months. Start with something tiny, for example the goal to write a single sentence each morning after breakfast. The point is that each time you sit down to write at a specific time, you're strengthening the neural pathways for that action, making it easier to perform. And if you weren't getting any writing done before, then seven sentences per week is an improvement! Once you're hitting your current goal around 80% of the time, you can raise the bar a bit.

2. Experiment and Adapt

When things aren't working out, adapt them or try something new! You could change the way you reward (or punish?) yourself, or change the time of day you write, or alter your goals depending on the weekday, allow yourself skip days, and so on! Try to stick with new methods for at least a couple of weeks so you can properly evaluate if they work.

Not everything that works for others will work for you, and sometimes what works for you changes over time. Always be ready to mix things up! A good habit is one that works for you. Don't be afraid to experiment, even with things that seem 'out there' for you. I was thoroughly convinced I was a night person, but it turns out my most productive time of the day is in the early morning!

There is a plethora of books, blogs, and social media accounts offering advice out there. Here are some tips when sailing the treacherous Sea of (Writing) Advice:
  1. Far from all the advice out there is good. Learn to be sceptical. (Yes, even to this very guide!)
  2. Even if a piece of advice is good, it might not be good for you.
  3. If someone claims they have a simple solution to productivity (or success), assume it's bogus. You will have to work for your progress.
  4. The more confident someone is in their idea/product/method, the more you should doubt them (and the more likely it is they are trying to sell you something).
3. Be Patient and Persistent

It takes a long time to build a strong habit, and you can easily be blind to the progress you're making day-to-day. Keep at it. Sticking with the habit gets easier with time, but that being said; don't trust it to run on autopilot. It will always require effort. The difference is that with time, it will require less effort to get started and to keep going. If you stubbornly stick with it, your progress will be slow and steady. In my experience, it is the only type of progress that lasts. If you've been at it for a long time and you feel like you're treading water, look back a bit further in time. We tend to compare with the previous day or week. But aren't you doing a heck of a lot better than you were six months ago? (And if you aren't, look at point 4. Then go through 1-3 again!)

4. Accept Failure and Learn From It

Okay, I lied a little. This is probably the most important part. Even with a small goal you'll inevitably fail some days. The dominant culture teaches us that failure is something terrible to be avoided at all costs. It is not. Failing a task does not make you a failure as a person. It makes you human. Don't dwell on it. It is a natural and inevitable part of improvement. Try to figure out why it happened and use this information to improve your odds of success in the future. Don't stack your goals, but start fresh the next day. Try to learn from your misstep, then forgive yourself and keep going. 🫂

Well, there are still two days left in the month so there might be additional developments, but... it's also Sunday, so I have more time for stuff like this.

Long story short, I'm probably a lot behind on getting Manse ready to query. I don't have any comps or even perspective comps, which is a major problem. At this point, I'm not even sure what to do. Finding comps for FGI was a little hard (and going with Dragomir as one might've been a mistake -- among other issues, I'm not sure the book resonates with agents), but there was stuff within the ballpark. I'm not seeing anything quite like Manse, which is a problem. I've seen a few books with an amnesiac POV (sometimes multi-POV), but the usage focuses far more on an exploitative element.

In general, I *might* stagger Manse's queries and send out more variations (specifically different opening pages). The query SHOULD be strong -- since it was generally met with approval -- but opinions on the opening pages were split and... well, there wasn't a lot of them. I'm also going to maybe put out a beta call on it, particularly after realizing how fast some betas read. Plus, it's not like I'll be ready to go until I have some comps.

Beyond that, I'm still closing out FGI's querying and, given how long it's gone, the "cliff" might be a bit later than October 15th. I've sent out 50+ queries in September, and have only heard back on 13 of them. While this includes 11 UK agencies (which are more likely to reject) and a few people lower on my list, it's a reasonable number of outstanding queries (and potentially more as I go with second/third choices at agnecies). Notwithstanding, it doesn't mean I can't start querying Manse, but it does kinda suggest a larger blast doesn't make sense.

Between September's unfinished goals (many of which are priorities) and everything else, I won't setting many new goals for October.

October 2024 Goals

1) Plan out a NaNo project
Haven't settled on idea... or, for that matter, had many ideas I've seriously considered.

2) Try to track down what I'd been planning in terms what I'll query next and so on.
An AWer has been generously reading FJ/X-Mas slasher, and after her feedback I'll figure out where things stand (and also check what's left to do on the query). I'm still waiting on the second beta to finish SLS. Beyond that, I'd written down a few things I THOUGHT about doing, but I can't remember what it was or where I wrote it. I'm assuming it's DHSDH and WWWRH, though. I also know MP and BBW were going to get reworked openings.

3) Possibly more research into the MG fantasy and horror markets
Although the problem with MG is that it's hard to self-pub in, I've been interested in trying a bit more with MG ever since going through a few comps. The other appeal is that it's a good venue for some thinner story ideas that might otherwise need to be novellas or need a lot of subplots, etc, to bulk it out. I can't imagine leaning heavily into it since it's more of an all-or-nothing market (basically if you can't trade-pub, you're kinda screwed)

September 2024 Goals

Again, I want to be ready to go with Manse by October 15th. As such, a few of the August goals are still priorities, but I have new goals as well (some of which came to mind in another topic)

1) Possibly finish drafting ACP. (I'd expected it might go into October, and it has. However, I'm nowhere near as far along as I would've liked. Right now, I might not finish until October 15-20. I'd assumed probably no later than October 5-10. There's also a chance it might be closer to 80k words by the end, although I'm hoping for 70-75k.)

2) Decide whether to trim Manse from 89k to 80k words. (Which would bring me closer to the SCBWI recommendations for YA.) (Undecided.)

3) Decide whether to predominantly query Manse as either a horror or urban fantasy. (Undecided.)

4) Put together some shorter pitches for Manse. (Didn't do.)

5) Finalize the backstory history in Manse. (Didn't do. Technically think I know how I'll go, though.)

6) Finalize some character names in Manse. (Started, but didn't finish.)

7) Read what I can of whatever comps I select for Manse (that might be an issue) (Haven't found any comps.)

8) Finish checking out the list of UK agencies (for FGI) (Either done or about done. Considering I'll finish what little might be left in the next day or two, I'll check it off.)

9) Check out additional agencies (for FGI) (Haven't finished)

10) Check the re-opening agents/agencies (again, for FGI) (Technically this is an ogoing process, but I've kept up with it and queried a few. Just going to check it off.)

11) Figure out what I'll work on after ACP (which will probably be the back-half of October) (Considering I'm behind on everything, it's more of a moot issue. I might start a quick read of something, though. My memory is a little fuzzy about which ones I'd thought about, although I believe DHSDH and WWWRH might've been among them.)

12) Come up with some ideas for NaNoWriMo (Nothing so far.)

August 2024 Goals

2) Write a synopsis for Manse (Haven't finished even the first version.)

3) Polish Manse's first 10 pages for SYW (Posted it to SYW, got a few opinions. Will make a few tweaks based on that. Might rejigger the opening paragraph a bit to have a few variants)

4) Research comps for Manse (No new progress in September. Hadn't spent that much extra time.)

September was a tough month. I didn't even come close to 1k words a day, so I think I'm going to dial it back to 500 and try to get 15k words in the whole month of October. I have a lot of half finished projects laying around that I could pick up, or I could start something new entirely.

I also want to try and engage more with writing communities online again.

Day 1 was 1,808 words, some synopsis-work, and I submitted a short story (plus, I had a rejection on FGI)

A nap kinda pushed back the early session while I got a late start on the late session. All things considered, I need to get more strict on my writing habits by the time NaNo rolls around (although I probably won't have anything to do with the official website this year, after their ludicrous statements condoning generative AI and attacking AI's critics).

I wound up subbing a short story today, after reading Clovitide's post in the writing thoughts topic. On top of that, I had a rejection from a Brit agency with a 1 agent = all rule.

As for the research/comp... I'm starting to wonder if The Creepening of DH is even a horror story. So far, there's been maybe two attempts at a spooky moment, at least one red herring, and then just very light atmosphere. Children's horror used to lean a lot harder into the horror elements, but the focus here is character drama and found family, which.... idk, it seems silly that so many outlets strongly suggest or outright call it horror. It's not bad, but the horror is ridiculously light. In a way, it almost reminds me of what I'm doing with ACP (although that's YA, not MG).

Currently at 56,472 words for ACP

A day late, but happy October! It's supposed to be autumn, but where I live we're climbing back up to 100-degree temps this week after getting teased with 80's 2 weeks ago :cautious: At least nights have been nice and cool. But I'm ready for sweater weather.

OCTOBER GOALS 🎃
1. Finish reading comp for LGC (currently at 81%)
2. Finish outline for KTN novel (so far, 7 chapters)
3. Another editing round (#4) for TKT

Saving energy for drafting next month.

Day 2.

Untangling the three chapters I had drafted as flashback in 1921-1922. The biggest chunk, 3700 words (Maria returning to Italy for a spell), is kinda getting in shape. It needs work, a lot of work, but limps along well enough that I felt the urge to post some of it for feedback and restrained myself.

The second chunk does not belong in this area of the manuscript. I cut most of it a couple days ago and left the parts that were still useful. Worked through those pages today, 700 words, and can certainly develop the passage but I don't know exactly where it belongs (not here) or if it's really earning its place. It's in Luigi's viewpoint now, because he's underrepresented in this story. But Luigi doesn't really have flashback chapters, so this all requires some noodling.

The third chunk I weedwhacked yesterday down to 761 words. Glancing through it, it looks like what is left either belongs on the cutting room floor or else integrated into the big first section. I'll probably make it into that section tomorrow. I think this portion is starting to behave itself.

Count: 94306 (which is heading downward which is good as I still need to draft many scenes.)

Day 2 was 2,529 words

Again, a nap ran really long (before the early session). When I eventually recovered, I wrote a bit, took a short break, then wrote a bit more, which had already put me over 1.6k words. The late session (which also started late) added another 909 words or so, so that kinda worked out. This was now the highest word count day for this particular project... which is an issue when I'm worried about the overall word count.

At this point, I might be getting closer to a potential overrun. I'll need to get through the remaining story beats a lot faster. Thankfully, that shouldn't be as much of an issue -- although there are a few ways I could go with something. (Which might work as well on that night in the story as the next, so... idk.

I'm still going through the final check on the agents list. It hasn't led me to any new queries, although I've gone back and forth over how to look at certain agencies (such as noticing something that might give them more esteem or thinking about whether others should be added to the 'questionable' or 'avoid' list). And, while doing a random check-up, I learned one of my dream agents (well... I'm not sure how huge my regard might be) has left her old agency to start a new one... and, although there's potentially a date when she'll open for querying, it's not until 2025. Mixed blessings there. Guess it might be expected, though, since one of her newer clients might be getting huge and she likely has a pretty solid list, based on the highlights. The one thing I'm kinda wondering about is whether she'll be solo or have other agents working with her.

Day 2-
I was on FIRE yesterday!

First round I got very in the zone and wrote for a few hours pausing for 10 minute snack breaks every 45-60 minutes. Got in 2,922 words that session and wrote all of chapter 6 in that sitting. I had another 45 minute gap later in the day as I was waiting for my parter to get ready to do out to dinner and got in another 807 words in that second round.

I was in such a zone yesterday I honestly wanted to cancel our dinner plans and just keep writing. Hoping that motivation is still there today in my writing.

Day three.

Part of the knot is smooth: moved the second chunk into a prior "Luigi" chapter, as an in-scene sort of flashback. Was delighted that it fits. Needs work, but it can fit there.

Yesterday evening I remembered that in the other version I had brought Mussolini himself onto the page. That should probably happen in this version as well. I don't think he was in Bologna for anything notable in late 1921/1922. His subordinate Leandro Arpinati was, so I could craft an interaction with him instead. Or I could have Maria travel up to Milan, where Mussolini was writing his columns. Maybe she could try to convince him to write or do something that to her seems good.

Or I could do what I did in the other version and have her come face-to-face with him in 1932. The advantage to that, is it can be the scene where she finally vanquishes Lucifer's hold on her life.

The advantage to putting it here instead, in 1921/22 is that is allows Lucifer to emerge into her life. Mussolini's a valid way to do either, I think. He definitely provides room to twist or pinch or whatever.

Lots of ways it could go, but it's a chekhov's gun situation, where I need her to face off because I've mentioned him on page and I thin k the reader then deserves to see him.

Day 3 was 1,978 words, and 5 agents queried.

Really missed the mark today, and actually by a mile rather than an inch. Basically, I had a nap run ridiculously long -- instead of getting up, I kept sleeping. After that, I wrote, got an okay amount done -- 1,443 words -- then had a much shorter sleep (technically shorter than the nap) because I'd napped so long, which left me a bit tired throughout the day. However, I only needed less than 560 words to hit par and was expecting to be more at 2.5k for the day, which would bring us closer to getting into the groove... but I fell asleep during my late session (which I started late, largely due to querying) and didn't even hit par. So, that was pretty frustrating.

On the other side of things, for the first two days of this month, I hadn't found anyway to query while double-checking my list, etc. Today, I found one person via the list, then QT let me know that two people had re-opened (one was on my check-back list, the other was just on the possible agents list that I would've touched far later), as well as another agent I wasn't familiar with and an agent from an agency I'd been looking at recently. All of which took a while, on top of also checking other names on that QT list to make sure I'd either queried or decided to skip those agents/agencies (and then what I was doing for the double-checks). It gets to be a lot after a while.

And all that doesn't even get into the other stuff I still need to ready Manse for querying. But hopefully some of that will be covered over the weekend.

Back from vacation...

Setting goals has been good for me to keep at it, but not once since I've joined AW last year have I met my goals, though I keep dialing down my expectations. Frankly, that's disheartening. Giving up is not an option, though. So, this October I will simply go with 'keeping at it' no matter what.

Day 3: Revised the scene I wrote before my vacation. Lost some words, gained some words (which I forgot to count). Around 4k to go.

Day 3:
Yesterday was hard for me to find time to write. I had a doctors appointment and an MRI which made it hard to find decent time to write. The anxiety meds they gave me for the MRI made me very drowsy so i spent most my writing time I left myself in the afternoon napping.

Day four.

mucking around on the same section. trying a few things. Drafted up a conversation between Grandma and Benito Mussolini. I know, I know, the idea sounds ridiculous ... which is kinda why i think it's worth a try.

count: 95533

hope to mark this chapter revised tomorrow.

p.s. day 19 of covid, testing negative, but still coughing and tired. Am operating at about 70% with hopes for a full recovery, fingers crossed.

Day 4 was 2,116 words, and 2 agents queried.

Skipped the nap after the previous day's issues, so I was pretty tired at times (ultimately collapsing in bed after a shower, which was after I kept nodding off until I decided to just call an end to the early session). The early session's output was okay-ish, but thankfully things went a bit better (although it felt like crap writing) during the late session, which got me over par for the day.

I only have about another 12k words to play around with. Flip a coin if that'll be enough. There's technically not that much to go, but there's still a bit more to go. If it stays under 80k, I'll be fine. Otherwise, I'll probably edit it down a bit after.

Agent-wise, the double-check is basically done. It's kinda down to a few agencies where I know where things stand (more or less) rather than actually checking to see what's happened with them. Granted, one of those agencies is Prospect (which I was considering skipping) and I just read the Bewares topic with the batshit insane situation going on over there where I'll probably avoid that agency, at least until the lawsuit plays out.
