Hi everyone.

I am looking to write several nonfiction books that will involve having real people facts and information. One of the books will be about the mob and crime bosses. It will detail stories and facts about mob and crime bosses.

My question: Is there any issue using use real people like mobsters in a book?

I have tried to search for an answer but there are so many varying opinions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Bennett

You already asked this in the Discord Channel. Like I said there, if you're concerned about getting sued, you need to consult an attorney. You have yet to specifically say what you mean by "ok". Do you think the mob will come after you? That you'll get sued for libel? That someone will demand money for being in your book?

We also asked if you were writing about living people or deceased.

Any legal advice would need to be obtained by a legal expert, and not by us here at AW. As far as I know, you can include real people in non-fic (it would be tough to do otherwise). Document your sources, and be careful of defamation or libel, since my understanding is (and I'm not a lawyer) is that it matters if the person is alive or dead. Also, if you use any of these people's words or writings, beware of copyright issues.

As noted above, no one at AW can offer legal advice, as doing so would place the forum owner in legal jeopardy. If members need legal advice, they need to consult a legal professional and set up a lawyer/client relationship.

I've asked a supermod to lock this thread. No further responses needed.

Allowing our members, including attorneys, to give legal advice puts the site at risk, so I need to lock this.
