I got back from the supermarket to find my 12 year old talking/playing games online with my kids' 7 year old half-sibling. They keep in touch with their dad/half siblings online and there are quite a lot of games that kids can play socially.

This was the conversation as I walked in:

7 yo: I'm going to work now to earn some money.
12 yo: okay
7 yo: I hate working. I wish I could just get money without working.

Apparently this is a game within Roblox where they go to work to earn money and buy houses and other nice things, in game.

Welcome to life, kiddo.

Both of my kids (twin daughters) made "Summa cum laude" honor roll for their first semester of their freshman year. They went to a different high school from all of their friends and they are thriving. My kids are kind of awesome.

Also helping a couple of my friends with their horses and seeing how much confidence that they are getting and watching them progress makes me smile too.

Also chickens chickening out in the yard.

Anaïs Trépanier was supposed to be the photographer, not the subject. But during a photo expedition in the Côte-de-Beaupré area north of Quebec City last week, a great grey owl swooped in with other ideas.

"I was clicking on the shutter and seconds after, I see it land on my lens," she told Breakaway's Alison Brunette. "It's the biggest owl we have here in Quebec. It's not like a chickadee."

Trépanier says the owl perched on her camera for about 30 seconds. She remembers standing as still as possible because her friends, who are also photographers, were saying, "Don't move! Don't move!" while they snapped some photos.

Oh yeah, Work at a Pizza Place! It's one of the most popular games in Roblox.

Two of my friends work at Roblox, one is a tools developer. He ends up in games a lot to test things and his account is flagged as an "admin" so small children constantly harass him for cool hats and free Robux lol

For things that made me laugh, [here's some ways you can fuck up AIs].

My group chat with friends has a chatbot, which has a lot of random features, one being you can ask /whatis a picture and he'll ????? and tell you what it is. I tried doing the iPod thing but he wasn't tricked at all. Which is funny because he's a giant mess of spaghetti python code running on an old laptop and most of his features are based around natural language processing...which is pretty different from an AI that looks at pictures and figures out what they are. Maybe he's too dumb to be tricked? Or maybe he just reverse-image searches the images and Google/Bing is too smart to fall for that? Or too dumb? The bot is a mystery, he just does whatever he wants.

I like the NYT crossword puzzle. One of the three newspapers I subscribe to has it, and I print it out--except for Sunday, when they run some other large puzzle. (The fact that I get it six days a week in something I'm already paying for is why I don't buy the app or subscribe to the paper.)

Recently my subscription allows me to access all the USA Today papers, so I started cruising for one that carried my puzzle on Sunday. Success! But my attempt to print it failed. It would have been pretty tiny if it shrunk to fit the paper anyway. (<--sour grapes)

Enter Mr. Maryn, who used print screen and cropping to get the puzzle grid on one sheet and all the clues on two more pages, all large enough to read.

Maryn, who hasn't done the Sunday puzzle in years

My wife and I went to a trail run event this morning, and we ran into a former coworker I've not seen since before the pandemic. Good guy. Great to see him (and to remember that I do know how to make small talk with folks--not had many chances the last couple years).

Ohhh this game, it really does inspire the funniest kid convos as OP said... and also inspired me, as a parent trying to be cool and play along, to eventually say, "Why would I do this in a game? I have a real job!":ROFLMAO:

Nice thing today: blooming flowers everywhere at the moment. Could almost inspire me to leave the computer for a bit!

Then comes the moment she realizes that her friends would have said exactly the same thing if the owl had attacked her. Gotta get that shot!:ROFLMAO:
See? Bet you didn't think how this fit into a thread titled 'Things that made you laugh'!

It's mother's day here in the UK and Ireland (not in the US, I think? You guys always have to be different;) ). I made some treacle spiced buns for my mum.

And the weather was beautiful here today and has been for about a week. It was 20C (68F) yesterday...that's considered a result even for July here! I've started to tan already.

That bit where my friend said Hey remember how you said you like Guinea Pigs? I got some for you!

Except for the fact that I'm apparently going to have Guinea Pigs, it was really nice that someone was listening. I guess. I was mostly just being polite though...

Need four Guinea Pig names.

After a long, cold, hard winter, I got a glorious spring day for my birthday. Snow will be back on Tuesday, but memories of yesterday will carry me through.

Snow is forecast in London on Saturday. And one of my work colleagues who's up north got snow today.

Because it's almost April and British weather is ardently non-conformist 🌨️❄️☃️

Northern Ireland here. Last Saturday it was 20c and I was wearing sun lotion to play tennis. Today it's freezing and they're forecasting frost tonight. 🤷‍♀️

AND NOW...... it is actually SNOWING

Here in Dorset, on the south coast, on 31 March.

My 12 yr old has decided Thor (who controls the weather) and Loki (god of pranks) have conspired to make it be a a white April Fools Day...

The coldest, wettest, windiest, most miserable weather I ever experienced (and I live in a part of the world noted for cold, windy, miserable weather) was in London, England in the middle of April. Dear lord, how do people live there? No wonder the British were able to keep calm and carry on despite blitzes and other disasters: they were hardened to adversity just by walking out the door. Salute!

Two tiny children all dressed up, running a circuit around a coin laundromat with big smiles on their faces.

My favorite Citizen Scientist, a fifth grader named Ty, brought in a tiny mouse skull to add to the museum bone collection and showed me the mysterious rock he was taking to the geologic museum for identification. I gave him a little bird ID book and some other materials that he stowed in his backpack like he was packing away the crown jewels. The kid cares about animals and rocks, and that gives me so much pleasure and hope for the future.

Yesterday my cycling group had our first ride of the year. We started with tons of bravado "Aw, we can keep going! We're monster cyclists!" only to find out we've all been sitting around since November and not as monster as we thought we were. We're all glad we kept it short.

We bought paint for the room that doesn't need painting but whose color failed to grow on me. It's going to be a color I actually like!

Maryn, who'll prep while it's still cold and paint when it warms
