I'm going to start pasting the nice letters I receive about this project in this thread.

Hi, Jenna. I am a newbie writer and have been subscribing to the newsletter. First, thank you for offering so much wonderful content without charge. (You'll be happy to know that it 'sold' two copies of NewNovelist :^)

Anyway, I am writing to say 'way to go' on the Stories of Strength book! What wonderful energy you've gathered around a great cause. I'm glad it has flowed smoothly. I have sent the notice to virtually everyone in my address book, including a professional newspaper guy in Houston and a couple of coach friends who have written their own books/have blogs, etc. The Internet works on geometric progression - I'm betting that you'll make more than your goal. No matter what, you've spear-headed something wonderful. just wanted to add my "Good for you!" and thanks.

All the best to you,
Deb

Thanks, Deb!

Letter from Billie

Jenna,
This is so fantastic - You are a one woman dynamo. Lulu is a fantastic place
to publish - and they are so helpful. I'm glad they are proving to be even
better than I imagined.
I put the link for Stories of Strength on my Writing Wide website - and I
will do book marks etc. but my computer freezes up everytime I try to
download the PDF version - I'll keep trying. Good Luck with this amazing
feat.

Jill -
I can't take it anymore!!! I must find out what is inside Stories of Strength. :)

If you are still slinging out PDF copies of the book, I'd love to give it a read. (I am a closet Chicken Souper - not of those books, specifically, but tear-jerker stories are my favorite to write; you feel like you're actually giving voice to someone who has a great deal to say about life.)

This is such a wonderful project - and the support from sales and writers' contributions is inspiring. I would be honored to write a review of the book, if that is what you are looking for. And I have a feeling I could probably do a bit of Christmas shopping on the site myself.

Let me know how I can help - and whether you can dole out an electronic copy.

Happy Friday,
Kristen

i'm adding this letter because, toni, is the librarian that so many here at aw sent books to. i may also be able to speak at the conference mentioned about sos. she also raises a question about how to order stories of strength.

Hi Ken,

Hope everything is going good for you. Do you do public speaking engagements? Are you a native Ohioan? Would you be interested in presenting an author's talk and short program at the Ohio Library Council's Small Libraries Conference in May 2006? I think the dates are the 17 - 18 in Columbus. The conference will be attended by approximately 100 librarians who work in small libraries. The thread of the conference is Small Libraries: Dynamic Community Centers?

Let me know if you've ever done anything like this and are interested. Also, how much stipend you normally receive, etc. If the librarians like your presentation, sense of humor and the like - you could probably get some speaking invitations. Would you be able to let me know before next Tuesday, Nov. 8th?

Also, how do I order copies of the anthology? I looked at Jenna's website but did not see the purchasing information? Do I order directly from you?

Let me know all this important stuff! LOL

Anyway, good to hear from you!

I asked that the press release be posted on our work internal website, and the manager posted it with my poem and with kudos for having it published in a book that has such a worthy cause.

A coworker called me to ask questions about ordering SoS and she told me that my poem really inspired her. She explained that she has been through a lot of stress lately, with deaths and serious illnesses within her family, etc. She said that my poem and the project really touched her and she wanted to thank me and to tell me that she was happy that we've done this book to help so many people, and she's giving me time during our regular Monday meetings to promote the book.

It really touched me that my one little poem could have such an impact on someone who needs some strength in her life. I told her that I have only read a few stories so far b/c I've had such a busy week, but I recommended "The Shrine" as well as "The Best Day", both of which profoundly moved me.

It was just so nice to get such positive feedback; I wanted to share.

From a beloved college roommate whom I've known for over 20 years. She grew up in N.O., her childhood home was destroyed and she's residing in TN with her daughter and hubby until further notice. Her parents and she have given enormously to the nonprofits of N.O. for decades. Please read and think. Thank you.

Hi Jill ~

I just ordered a copy! It looks great. I cannot wait to read it. I've not been able to focus on books since the storm, but a collection of essays will be great.

Just before I received your email, Grant and I were talking about the fate of Avery's wonderful New Orleans school ~ The International School of Louisiana ~ www.isl-edu.org .

One of the biggest heartbreaks of this whole ordeal was losing the family / teacher community of this fantastic, 5-year old, public charter school. ISL is a language immersion school (70% of the kids' day is in either french or spanish ~ you choose the main curriculum in K) providing a challenging education to kids from ALL ECONOMIC backgrounds (50% + of the kids were eligible for the federal free lunch program, and the rest were like Avery). Very reflective of the demographics of the City of New Orleans. I think, if you visit the website, you'll be very impressed with this unique program.

Anyway, I noticed as I looked over the Stories of Strength site that the fundraising goal includes "rebuilding schools." Do you think they might consider donating a portion of the proceeds to benefit ISL? They are hanging on by a thread now and working DAY AND NIGHT (wonderful headmaster and his wife who've opened and run charter schools all over the world ~~~ lost their home in Lakeview to Katrina, but they keep working to save the school) to get running again. It would be a GODSEND if SoS agreed to do such a thing!!

Here's a parent-created and led fundraiser we did for ISL last spring. First of the kind we'd EVER undertaken and it was a phenomenal success ~ planned to do another one this Spring, of course. Won't happen ~ http://ebenefit.us/ISL/ ~

Let me know what you think! ISL has a yahoo "ISL diaspora," which could MOVE SALES like crazy, I think, particularly if we push the "holiday gift" idea.

Oh, another idea..........I'm working for the beloved, Nrew Orleans community radio station featured below in my signature lines. It's a phenomenal org., also fighting to come back and call back, reconnect and revive New Orleans' music community. We've got an ACTIVE email list of 5,500 people nationwide......we could use that, too, if WWOZ was chosen as one of the designees. These 2 things would be so well targeted to reviving New Orleans cultural and economic strength.....let me know what you think!

Thanks, Jill. Can't wait to read SoS. Mary Liz

I just received another lovely note from an acquaintance that I emailed with the book info:

Hey Sara! I just wanted to say that I got the book and I loved your story! I just ordered another copy for my mom.

Thanks for telling me about this! We have to figure out lunch sometime soon, too.

This is from an old boss of mine...

Ray, I'll look for both books. I'm glad to see that your work is being
published! The anthology to benefit disaster relief charities is a great
idea - this has been such a terrible year.

Take care.

My friend told me today that Matthew's The Shrine made her cry. She said that she is very impressed with the stories. She said they are well-written but don't necessarily cause you to make a huge investment in kleenex. She said some aren't tear-jerkers, but motivational and inspiring pieces and she really likes that; the variety of the stories. I've asked her to do a lulu review for us but she isn't sure. Give me another day to work on her. :)
