Hi everyone! I'm from Portugal (so most of my writing is actually in Portuguese) but currently live in Sweden. I've been writing ever since I learnt how to put words together, before that I created stories with my Barbie dolls. As an adult, my writing has changed its main focus from story to form (but I still truly believe that story is what holds the enchantment), so you may guess I'm more literary fiction inclined. That said, I read like a madwoman across the genre spectrum and like to experiment with everything. Just yesterday I was working on a horror short story.

Over the last year I have been struggling with my mental health, which has impacted my writing. It's hard for me to keep a routine, so I often write a lot for a week and then don't write for long stretches of time. I want to change that. I remembered that the most productive time of my life was when I was part of a writing forum in my teens, so I decided to join this one and see if it helps. I often wish I had a community I could turn to to exchange ideas and experiences. I hope this will be the right place.

Right now, I have two long term projects, one novel that I need to edit/rewrite heavily, and another one for which I'm still completing the first draft. The first one is more realistic and is based on my experience living as a foreigner in China, the second one plays with an absurdist flavoured brand of magical realism.

I used to work at a publishing house and still do the odd job as a freelance proofreader now and then, so I am very much into editing and beta reading, though I don't get the chance to do it often. I enjoy critiquing other people's work and I don't really believe in providing empty comments that say everything is perfect. Of course positive feedback is important, but it should always offer a fresh perspective or a different angle that the author may choose to take or not into account.

Besides writing, I learn Swedish, take long walks in nature, go to metal concerts and try to read while my boyfriend is being noisy.

I think that's enough about me! Thank you for reading.

Hello and welcome :)

Great sources of inspiration, all those travels and insights in other cultures than the one you were born into. I envy you!

I remembered that the most productive time of my life was when I was part of a writing forum in my teens, so I decided to join this one and see if it helps.

Definitely the right choice. It was like that for me, and I only wish I'd joined years ago :)

Welcome! I'm so used to seeing people who pride themselves in how much they can vomit all over the work being shown for "critique" (Not here of course).

It's good to hear that others are not like that. Your perspective is correct.

Welcome.

That alone is pretty neat.

I used to work at a publishing house

A Portuguese-language publishing house or an English one?

tbh, I'd followed a few YT channels involving expats in China -- basically people who'd gone over there as English language teachers before starting other stuff (and marrying Chinese partners, etc). Their discussions of modern Chinese society, etc, were fascinating.

Are you talking about the two guys who would drive around on motorcycles and film the area using drones? The American and the guy from South Africa? I'm really bad with names, but I've followed both of them for a long time.

Both of them fled China.

Among other people, yeah.

Both of them fled China.

I know they'd left for a while, but the last time I saw their videos recommended, it looked like they were in the country again.

Flip, that's impressive, the number of languages, cultures, and countries you can juggle. Welcome!

You'll find that mental health issues are a common theme here. I don't know if they're something writers are particularly prone to, of if we're just willing to discuss them openly, but you'll find affirming attitudes rather than judgement on this forum.
