Has anyone had dealings with Madness Heart Press? https://madnessheart.press/?v=7516fd43adaa

I've seen their name a few times in regards to their horror anthologies, and it looks like they publish novels as well. I couldn't find much about their published books, though. Everything seems fairly new.

Hmmm. Immediate red flags are that the website is geared toward writers, not readers, and there is no staff listing that I can find.

A check on LinkedIn shows two staff members for MHP: Desiree Baltisberger, Administrative Director (whose background experience appears to be largely therapy-oriented), and John Baltisberger, Publishing Editor, (whose background is in sales and media content). Ms. Baltisberger's has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science; Mr. Baltisberger has a BA in Theatre. According to their LinkedIn resumes, both currently hold jobs other than the publisher positions.

In other words, neither staffer has any experience or education in trade publishing, and this micro-press is clearly a sideline rather than a full-time occupation.

I give them props because they are clearly trying to offer bookstores both discounts and returns, which may assist them in getting brick-and-mortar presence. Their website includes a shop. Their books are also available on Amazon but nearly invisible: the three anthologies they've published this year have one review between them, and with page counts ranging from 214-116 pages, their Kindle pricing of $9.99 is, IMO, way out of line.

Also just my opinion, but their covers are only so-so and none of them say "horror" to me. One looks like a history book, another like a medical thriller, and the third is just a blah gray background. A look inside reveals formatting that is...well, peculiar. In two of the books, the author bios aren't separated from the stories, and the actual layout is cramped and inconsistent from book to book. Anthologies in a single genre from a single publisher should have a similar look to establish their brand.

Clearly MHP is learning as it goes. So the question to ask yourself is: do I want to let them use my writing as training wheels?
