My first job out of college was at a small pet store chain. It only lasted a couple of years, but we were a somewhat close-knit group—young 20-somethings running a company. The owner died at 30 of cancer, the creditors descended, and the business closed. We staff scattered to the winds. One young gay man who worked there was memorable. Mostly because as the years went by, I came out, and AIDS descended, I’ve often wondered what became of him. Did he make it? I’d forgotten his last name until tonight when a Facebook post of someone reminded me. What the heck, Google!
And there he was. That sweet young face, looking out from a yellowed newspaper clipping of an obituary from 1991. The GLBT Historical Society and Bay Area Reporter digitized every obit they could find in the Bay Area Reporter since 1972 and put them into an online searchable database.
Wow. I have such mixed feelings. I’m so sad he didn’t make it. But I’m glad to finally know.
