The nation held its breath, all with opinions about whether the tanks should shoot the ship before the aliens shot first or infected them with something worse than COVID (as they all knew invaders were apt to do, having wiped out most of the native population of the same nation just centuries early) or took our jobs, whatever; or Perhaps they should be trying messages of peace in every fashion they could think of, from the peace symbol to “Ave Maria” to all the languages that had ever been transmitted into space.

Although he hadn’t given her a definitive idea of what the aliens were doing here, she was encouraged that he hadn’t suggested that they were here looking for the two of them and their biological family specifically.
Maybe she’d even pick up more clues, assuming she hadn’t driven too far out of range of Alien Boy.

He switched off the lights and flopped face first onto his bed without even bothering to remove his shirt or socks or even pulling back the blankets. It was an extra five seconds he couldn’t spare so close to bedtime, lest he faced the wrath of his parents for staying up so late, even if it was only for five seconds later than usual.
They looked behind them at the crowd, blew a kiss for a little cheek, and walked up the ramp, singing at the top of their lungs.
Soon she was there with Mia and the agent, led by another army-national-guard-whatever-military person.
They gave Ave a dose for her mother (Mia would never find out how Avery managed to convince the doctors to use it on her, but those were details).
