good old Photobucket. It keeps me out of trouble.

(Mostly because they delete the really good stuff.)

Hah! I got yelled at by Mac for screwing up picture postings a long time ago. This was much, much more calm.

Nothing wrong with showing a little skin here and there, and then some, but we should be careful not to turn this discussion into a picture sharing thread. Also, try not to hot-link images from other sites but save them instead before posting to a third party (as Syn has done) such a Photobucket, which helps to reduce bandwidth.

Carry on. :)

Photobucket??

oh...great...now you tell me...

*sigh*

I tried ladies...alas, my photobucket skills are nil

:(

no more hotties from me

ah, it's easy. Most of the pics you want are already there. Start an album, do a search and save it to your album.

So, we can't post straight from photobucket? I thought we could.

we can, if you have your own album. No wait. I've posted straight from other accounts on PB when I didn't particularly want that photo in my albums. I think that's okay too.

I think as long as you use PB or some other photo hosting site it's all good. I don't understand hot-links so I had to ask and this was the preferred way to do it.

I'm pretty sure hotlinks are a breakfast food. And he's right. We shouldn't put those on our computers.

ooh, just because I gotta go buy that magazine now :)

I believe Mr. Depp is on there also. Mmmm. Yummy. :D

Can you buy me one with these guys on it, while you're at it?

Heh! I get it religiously every year. It's a our version of the yearly swimsuit edition men get with Sports Illustrated. Guys get Victoria's Secret commercials, magazines like MAXIM, etc. We girls need somethin' too, ya know? (Dang, I've been single for too long again...lol)
I scrolled back to see what all the hub-bub was about.

At first I thought, what's all the fighting, there's plenty of half naked men to go around. Then I decided to booty-bump you all out of the way and take them for myself. Just because.
That is a very nice avatar of your man storygirl. I hope he comes home safe and sound. *sending good vibes overseas*

My fault. (I'm a bad influence on my fellow posters. I started it!) I haven't been on a message board in a long time and I'm getting a little picture crazy now that I'm back on one. I'll cool it a bit. I'm using sites like ImageShack.us now too since I was mistakenly hot-linking when I first joined. (slcboston set me straight) ;)

Call me stooopid, but what's bandwidth? SK said to prevent it.

I have no computer knowledge, I'm pathetic, I know.

Basically, we just need to upload pics we want to post to photobucket or another image server like it before we post it here. That's all I know, and I think that's all we have to know.

I just wanted to post men...:(

I post lolcats all the time in the Royal thread, and food in the HoF. I wonder if I'm doing it wrong. They all come from PB. Maybe I should talk to Lavern, or (trembles) SK.

If they come from photobucket, that is a good thing.

I was looking up more info too. This was helpful.

http://www.webweaver.nu/html-tips/hotlinking.shtml

I find ImageShack.us easier to use then Photobucket.

http://www.imageshack.us/

Thanks Beatrix, I know what bandwidth is now (sort-of) and hotlinking (sort-of) And all I got to say is EEK!! So, am i stealing? Or does PB willingly let you take images? must find out.

slcboston sent me this...I found it helpful.

Well, I know how to post pics, done a million of 'em. It kinda reads in there that they just do what I do. I did learn how to post a link though, that was very cool. I'll have to try that out. :) Thanks.

No problem. I've been on a computer forever and I'm still learning this stuff too. Or I forget how to do something and have to be shown again or re-learn.

In otherwords, computers = frustrating and confusing. (sometimes)

If you're sharing images from places like Photobucket or ImageShack, the photos don't use nearly as much space, or bandwidth, on AW. Those sites host the images, so they take up very little room on AW's server.

Hot-linking is when you copy pictures directly from non-hosting sites and display them here. They use up much more room on the server and can bog down the system when too many are posted.

Also, you have to be careful of hyper-linking to sites to direct members to photos you'd like them to see. A while back, one site owner changed images of celebrities to hardcore porn, which came as a surprise to those of us who followed the link. I think I still have that one bookmarked somewhere...

Just because I'm so stressed right now, I'm going to ..... scream. Dang, that'd take too much energy. I don't really drink, even though I make it a daily habit to make myself sound like a real lush on here. But I'm willing to start. Can someone please hand me a Margarita through the monitor? Make it a double? Um, a triple?

Well, if we can pry SK's head out of the way...I think he found that bookmark.

*shoves* *grunts* *shoves some more*

Ah. Goldfish flakes. Here SK, have a snack.

*dusts hands*

That went well. Here you go Liza. I didn't know which flavor you preferred so I got a Strawberry and a regular. Drink up. :D

Just because I think SK should let us know where that bookmark is...so we won't accidentally come across it...yanno.

The problem is less the space taken up on the server, more that there's a limit as to how much data can be transmitted every month for many websites. If we hotlink to an image on someone else's site, we're using someone else's bandwidth without their permission -- it's sort of like running an illegal pipe into their irrigation ditch. And AW is a pretty big pipe.

AW has a ton of traffic -- upward of 3 million page loads a month. For a hotlink to an image on Joe Schmoe's blog, hosted on his own domain, that can mean it costs Joe real money in actual bandwidth overage charges -- and those are like cell phone minutes; overages add up really fast.

Photobucket, Flickr, other file-hosting sites, or your own website are totally cool to link to. :) Though, if you're linking to an image hosted on your own website, you might want to make sure you have sufficient bandwidth, if the hotlink ends up in a particularly high-traffic thread. :)
