Welcome to June.

Considering it's now June 1st, I figured I might as well post the new daily challenge topic. However, I'll once again reference Magnus's guidelines and suggestions for these daily challenges (which remains good advice, etc)

Welcome!

This is a thread open to anyone who wants to build a long-term writing habit! That could include writing, editing, research, or anything else that supports your writing, like self-care or just putting bread on the table.

By sharing your efforts here you'll get some accountability to help boost your motivation, and you'll be part of a community of fellow habit-builders who encourage and support each other!

:snoopy:

Feel free to start the month out by stating your goals. When you report in, you can also take the opportunity to chat a little with the other participants, offering words of encouragement, ideas, or advice!

A few things I ask that you keep in mind:*
  • To avoid clutter, please only post once per day.
  • It's always nice to offer a few words of encouragement to others!
  • But don't feel bad if you don't have the time or energy to interact with everyone.
  • Please remember that no one is obliged to follow or even respond to any advice you offer.
  • Ultimately, it's up to each person how they wish to participate!

GOOD LUCK!

/Magnus

*I am not an admin or moderator on these forums, so all I can do is ask nicely.

TIPS FOR BUILDING A (WRITING) HABIT

1. Set Achievable Goals

This is probably the most important part. Too often people set goals they have no chance of hitting, then get discouraged when they fail and give up. Be realistic. You need goals that you can reliably reach more often than not. Hitting a smaller goal will give you a confidence boost and set you up for success the next day, building momentum. A good goal is a little bit challenging but doesn't overwhelm you. If you find yourself failing your goal regularly, lower the bar.

A lofty long-term goal might be fine, but if you aren't currently getting much writing done, a goal to write 3000 words per day isn't something you can expect to achieve within weeks or even months. Start with something tiny, for example the goal to write a single sentence each morning after breakfast. The point is that each time you sit down to write at a specific time, you're strengthening the neural pathways for that action, making it easier to perform. And if you weren't getting any writing done before, then seven sentences per week is an improvement! Once you're hitting your current goal around 80% of the time, you can raise the bar a bit.

2. Experiment and Adapt

When things aren't working out, adapt them or try something new! You could change the way you reward (or punish?) yourself, or change the time of day you write, or alter your goals depending on the weekday, allow yourself skip days, and so on! Try to stick with new methods for at least a couple of weeks so you can properly evaluate if they work.

Not everything that works for others will work for you, and sometimes what works for you changes over time. Always be ready to mix things up! A good habit is one that works for you. Don't be afraid to experiment, even with things that seem 'out there' for you. I was thoroughly convinced I was a night person, but it turns out my most productive time of the day is in the early morning!

There is a plethora of books, blogs, and social media accounts offering advice out there. Here are some tips when sailing the treacherous Sea of (Writing) Advice:
  1. Far from all the advice out there is good. Learn to be sceptical. (Yes, even to this very guide!)
  2. Even if a piece of advice is good, it might not be good for you.
  3. If someone claims they have a simple solution to productivity (or success), assume it's bogus. You will have to work for your progress.
  4. The more confident someone is in their idea/product/method, the more you should doubt them (and the more likely it is they are trying to sell you something).
3. Be Patient and Persistent

It takes a long time to build a strong habit, and you can easily be blind to the progress you're making day-to-day. Keep at it. Sticking with the habit gets easier with time, but that being said; don't trust it to run on autopilot. It will always require effort. The difference is that with time, it will require less effort to get started and to keep going. If you stubbornly stick with it, your progress will be slow and steady. In my experience, it is the only type of progress that lasts. If you've been at it for a long time and you feel like you're treading water, look back a bit further in time. We tend to compare with the previous day or week. But aren't you doing a heck of a lot better than you were six months ago? (And if you aren't, look at point 4. Then go through 1-3 again!)

4. Accept Failure and Learn From It

Okay, I lied a little. This is probably the most important part. Even with a small goal you'll inevitably fail some days. The dominant culture teaches us that failure is something terrible to be avoided at all costs. It is not. Failing a task does not make you a failure as a person. It makes you human. Don't dwell on it. It is a natural and inevitable part of improvement. Try to figure out why it happened and use this information to improve your odds of success in the future. Don't stack your goals, but start fresh the next day. Try to learn from your misstep, then forgive yourself and keep going.

There's one more section to go in this version of my WIP, and at the end of June I hope I can call Draft Three (of this version) finished.

Day 1: Pull the final ~19000 words from Scrivener into a Word document.

This month's goal is to write every day, at least something. I'm halfway through a novel first draft and am pausing to write a short story for a while before returning to the novel. Between them I should have plenty to go at.

Day 1

610 words to finish a chapter on the novel. I've done a blog post too and have now got my mind on the short story, which is kind of fermenting in the back of my head until tomorrow.

Still a bit adrift in terms of the path forward at this point. As of now, I'm still probably going to pull back on LL1 and instead focus on trying to query Pointy Hat (which I'm not as emotionally invested in... and not as time-invested in, since LL1 took longer to write and already has a sequel written).

And then my other focus needs to be on getting STMHB ready for querying since that'd allow me to query the authors who don't take MGYA, which is kind of a bottleneck, considering there are some agencies where I've burned through the MGYA agents or they aren't currently open.

As for Witch's Stew... not sure if I'll start drafting that this month. I have two more MG to draft before November. However, Witch's Stew still needs planning (which I want to finish this month) and I need to do prelim planning on Spy School (to try to get it to a viable idea)

Whether or not I start drafting Witch's Stew, I also need to decide on the next thing I edit.

June 2025 Goals

1) Finish drafting JDC

2) Research comps for Pointy Hat

3) Finish readying Pointy Hat's opening pages for SYW (shouldn't take long... probably?)

4) Maybe proof the first 50 pages of Pointy Hat (as in kind of a final read)

5) Editing pass on STMHB (might take one pass, might take two; not sure)

6) Finish the early planning for Spy School

7) Decide on a new editing project (or I guess continue one)

8) Finally follow up with the two agents who haven't responded to my full (which is probably a "no," but I want an answer at this point; the better of the two is a bit less likely, since she full req'd based on my query only)

May 2025 Goals

> Reading those SLS notes (March Goal I need to finish) (Done)

1) Finish planning Witch's Stew (Wound up working on JDC instead)

2) Possibly start drafting Witch's Stew (MG horror, would probably be relatively fast) (Wound up working on JDC instead)

3) Fix the rooftop scene in Manse (No progress)

4) New/adjusted query letter for Huho (No progress)

5) Synopsis for Huho (Mostly done, but I think it was already mostly done)

6) Maybe look into alternate comps for Huho (No progress)

7) Fix that mattress stuff in Huho (No progress)

8) Possibly do the next round on edits on Pointy Hat (not sure if it's mark-ups or edits, although there's a lot of continuity issues with names)
(Finished)

9) Maybe write a query for Pointy Hat
(Finished; the version had an okay reception, although a variety of changes were suggested. Need more time to reflect on all that)

10) Write a non-superhero query for LL1 (No progress. It's also a lot easier to describe it as being superhero, even though technically all of the heroes use gadgets/items)

March 2025 Goals

2) Read both sets of beta notes for SLS (Finally finished)

3) Maybe start the STMHB edits (I mean... I guess I started it since I did the mark-ups, etc.)

7) Maybe clean up the opening pages of STMHB and post them to SYW (Haven't done.)

February 2025 Goals

3) Look into comps for CM (No progress)

4) Write a query for CM (No progress)

8) Write a synopsis for STMHB (No progress)

9) Look into comps for STMHB (No progress)

December 2024 Goals

6) Write a synopsis for DHSDH (Never finished. No new updates.)

7) Maybe look into comps for DHSDH (No progress. Keep forgetting.)

June! Let's hope it slows down because May went by way too fast.

Goals:
-Finish Prototech rewrite
-Beta
-Revise query

-Finish Time Loop spot check/revisions
-Write synopsis
-Query the one or two agents I have queued for it

-Get back into my YA fantasy. Finishing it will be cool, but no rush.

In! My main, overarching goal for June is the same as it is every month: write something in each of the two novels I'm currently working on every day. I don't have a set word count; instead, I try to write at least 1 page in each of my WIPs(double-spaced). Additionally, I have the goal of finishing one of my novels this month(target expected finish date is within the next 3 weeks).
Day 1: 1,862 words, 6 pages
WIP #1: 60,733 words, 209 pages
WIP #2: 50,674 words, 174 pages

Hello June! I completed most of my quarterly writing goals in May, but I think I'll continue drafting KTN, because why not? I'll clean up queries for TKT and LGC and revise the synopsis for LGC. Might hunt for another comp for LGC since I have 1 solid one and 1 not as strong.

JUNE Goals 🌞⛱️
- Write 20,000 words of KTN
- Revise queries for TKT and LGC
- Revise synopsis for LGC
- Research comps for LGC

Day 1 was 2,524 words

Like Saturday, I kinda-sorta wound up starting to tire during my early session, so I called it quits early (again, I should've started writing earlier that night/morning). Like Saturday, I made up for it during the evening. Unlike Saturday, the late session (despite a late start) wound up more productive. (I wouldn't necessarily say "better", though, since the end of that chapter feels rocky.)

I wanted to get around to the last few things I needed to edit the opening of Pointy Hat, but didn't. I also didn't query, or even finish looking over the previous week's QT email. Kinda slacking with that.

On the research/comp side of things, the next 3 stories in Darcy Coates's Quarter to Midnight were a lot better than the first, although "Crypt" easily stood above the others (but I most creeped out by "The Mannequin"; "Mirror Man" was more okay).

I also started reading Carlyn Greenwald's YA horror/thriller Murder Land, which is... well, I'd DNF it if I hadn't borrowed it via Hoopla. (I feel more invested in things I borrow through Hoopla.) However, if it keeps not grabbing me, I might jump to that other Hoopla borrow.

Currently 30,810 words for JDC
Queried 0 agents so far this month. - 1 day, 0 agents queried
Currently 94/312 pages into a research/comp (Darcy Coates's Quarter to Midnight: Fifteen Tales of Horror and Suspense)
Currently 22/336 pages into a research/comp (Carlyn Greenwald's YA horror/thriller Murder Land)

Go through at least 1 chapter of my main WiP, rereading and editing as necessary. Or edit based on feedback from my alpha reader.

Yesterday, I got through chapter 4. Now, I am starting on chapter 5.

JUNE!!!

Honestly, new months shouldn't start on Sundays. I do not have it together on Sundays.

Summer break is here guys, it's not gonna be good for my writing productivity. I'm exhausted at night. I might have to consider going to bed early and getting up at the crack of dawn. We've also got some travel plans next weekend/week so I doubt I'll get a drop done those days. And I need to pack and prep for that so that'll eat into this week too. June isn't looking great.

GOALS:
- Finish plotting TLN
- Zero Draft TLN
- Start TLN Rewrite - not sure how many chapters I'll get through this month, I'll have to assess as I go because I don't wanna start typing away before I'm ready.

Day 1 - I got some more plotting done. Sorted out a few more arcs.
Day 2 - Now it's time to start fitting stuff together and the idea seemed easier than actually doing it is turning out to be. Oops. Didn't get much done today, I'll try harder tomorrow.

Haven't checked any boxes yet so no stats yet.

Books 40/100 - Still reading Sunrise on the Reaping 60%

Day 2 was 2,663 words and 1 agent queried (plus 2 rejections)

Like the last few days, I kinda bombed the early session, except this time it was due to a nap run long (which pretty much became the night/morning's sleep; and I hadn't so much napped as a tiredness thing, but to preempt tiredness, so... that could've gone better). So, I only got about 445 words done during the early session after that (both because my head was a bit off, but I'd also kinda hit a snag in the story where I wasn't sure how I wanted to write something). Because I was so far behind, I wound up writing in kinda-late evening (after 9pm), which got me another 950 words, and then I finally late-started the late session some time after, giving me another 1,262 (so... kinda slow-ish). In aggregate, it was one of the project's better days, but JDC has been a lot slower than Pointy Hat which, in turn, was far slower than Huho.

The story itself has become a little harder to write at times because I wasn't sure how I wanted to handle something (specifically because there's no way of knowing how the reader might interpret it, given it's different from the previous going). When I revise, I might split a few of the chapters differently, although that was the potential for making it a bit more confusing (to the extent the reader might not immediately figure out what's going on and asssume they've misread/misunderstood something).

All things considered, I'm kinda approaching the end. I had worried a little that the story had the potential to run long because I kinda went too heavy with the showing in the early chapters (including a few scenes that might've been dragged out). However, I'd wanted to keep the draft under 45k, and right now I might be able to clock in at 40k words.

Somewhat amusingly, the day's first rejection from JDCLA (the JDC part of that is amusing, since it's the same acronym as the WIP -- and that part abbreviates (?) the more important part of the agency's name, since the LA is just 'liteary agency'). I subsequently quered somebody else. The other rejection is from an agent's assistant at WH, which came in after 7pm when I wasn't looking and by the time I noticed, it was too inconvenient to query anybody else. The kinda-hiccup is that second rejection was over LL1, and LL1's querying is kinda on hiatus at the moment. However, I believe there's an open agent or two who I haven't queried with FGI.

The current research comp (Murder Land) is still slow-going (slow in the sense that I'm not engaged; things have certainly happened, including one of the book's major events). At this point, I might just DNF it. I really should've researched a bit more, specifically looking at the sample pages on Amazon. My biggest gripe is the writing (although I guess the storytelling also doesn't do it for me)

Currently 33,473 words for JDC
Queried 1 agent so far this month. - +1
Currently 94/312 pages into a research/comp (Darcy Coates's Quarter to Midnight: Fifteen Tales of Horror and Suspense) - NO CHANGE

I'm going to try and do stuff this time!

Okay, so, my goals and such for a writing habit will largely look like this:

Weekdays: Get 1000 words written or edited during my lunch break
Weekends: Be too covered in children and house chores to breath, let alone write.

Today I edited my oldest teens' homework. It's not exactly what I would have liked to be editing, but I gotta parent ahead of writing chapters -.-

It's the third day and I'm already behind on posting updates. But I did keep track.

Day 1 - Wrote 706 words of KTN.
Day 2 - No words. Work was exhausting and drained my creative energy. Listened to an audiobook instead.
Day 3 - Productive day, especially when my car maintenance appointment took 3 hours. Got in 1,267 words. I really need to wrap up the current chapter and move on to the next, because this one is giving sagging middle vibes. A problem to be solved in future edits.

Day 3 was 2,647 words

The early session worked out (despite a nap running long). Since I was already over 1.4k for the day, I didn't bother with an afternoon/evening session (which would've helped) and once again started the late session late.

Beyond that, I may need to move around a few chapters (well, if I want something to be more surprising or confusing).

I never got around to checking who to query next from WH, or finishing going through last week's QT email (despite the fact it's getting close to time for the next one).

On the research/comp side, I finally decided to at least pause (if not DNF) Carlyn Greenwald's YA horror/thriller Murder Land, which just isn't doing it for me. I started reading Jennifer's YA horror What Stalks Among Us and... eh. The first chapter wasn't great (I didn't like it how it hopped back and forth between the maze and getting to the maze), but it's a lot more promising overall. My biggest overall issue is that the "maze" is rather linear

Working on finishing the final chapter of WIP#2! There will be an epilogue I have to write after that, but it's almost done! Upon completion, it'll be the third novel I've written!

Day 4 was 2,871

Forgot to mention this during yesterday's update, but my day 3 included subbing pitches to that MG Hub thingy. According to the page with the rules, 70% of the previous pitches got at least 1 request (assuming I didn't butcher that statistic), so if I don't get at least one with three pitches, that's going to look pretty fucking bad. Anyway, I think the requests don't start going out until the 11th, so I have some waiting ahead of me.

But that's the story of Yesterday Nether and Next Week Nether. Let's talk about Today Nether (which is technically Yesterday Nether, and the other Yesterday Nether is really The Day Before Nether.)

Today's progress seemed a bit start and stop. I skipped that nap, but wound up having a kinda underperforming early session (not directly related to tiredness). I kinda made up for it by writing a bit in the afternoon then a bit more in the evening; that kinda combined afternoon/evening session was another 802, which with the 853 from the early session brought me to 1,655 for the day. Now, despite starting my late session very late, I could've and SHOULD'VE still hit 3k words for the day... but I kinda got distracted near the end of the late session and squandered some of the remaining time.

Anyway, I'm kinda approaching the ending, but with only a loose-ish idea in mind for the ending. Again, very mixed feelings about this project. The kinda bigger issue is the possibility it might be unsaleable -- or, at least, a few elements might garner a requested revision. But technically the kids kinda learn, so... idk.

Once again, nothing on the agent side. Still need to do a bunch of stuff, which I should get started on.

For the research/comp, it seems like What Stalks Among Us won't really work for anything. Kind of a pain, but whatever. I'll probably finish reading it anyway. Although I don't really like the characters, the pacing, and suspect the book could probably be trimmed significantly, the central mystery/premise is intriguing enough that I'm curious how things unfold, despite these kinds of stories usually disappointing me.
