How do you approach your first drafts?

It feels a bit strange how some of my projects have an outline of important points to hit while others are just "I wanna do this, I guess I'll put it here." Like a mental push pin board but as a messy display of notes in my phone and on my bookshelf.

I wanna say it's about how excited I am about seeing the whole of my story written out in some form, but at the same time, it doesn't mean that not writing an outline means that I'm not just as excited. I can still see the story just as vividly with or without an outline.

I think it was Stephen King who said if it's important enough, you won't forget it and I guess I took to that when writing my first drafts. Don't know if that makes me more pantser or planner, though.
