There’s an exchange in Terry. Pratchett’s “Hogfather” that nicely parses the difference between horror as involving imaginary monsters and the kind of real-world monsters one encounters in (some) thrillers when Death and his granddaughter have an after-action discussion about a psychotic assassin the granddaughter has just slain in front of two small children:

“The children had to watch that!”
EDUCATIONAL.
. . .
“But they saw he’s human—“
I THINK THEY HAD A VERY GOOD IDEA OF WHAT HE WAS.
