‘But you must,’ he continued decisively, ‘because it will be your duty as Queen Consort. You must play along with the game that men have laid down for you and use your wifely duties to your advantage. Bed your husband and you can control the sons that will come of it. Listen to his worries and you can provide the answers. Host tea parties for influential wives and you can control the gossip at court. Don’t you see, Victoire? There will be a potential for power everywhere you look.’

Dix’s eyes seemed to look over at her at that point; his eyes shifted toward her above his oxygen mask and he appeared to understand. His gaze at her was one of love and adoration; Margie leaned forward as she held his hand.

“My darling, you saved everyone; you did your job. So, you just rest now. Sleep peacefully - I’m right here with you, now and forever.”

“Sleep, my wonderful man,” she cooed quietly.

Rusty sat on the ground with Syracuse Sam’s head in his lap. He whispered something to him as he rocked him back and forth like a mother with a small child. The men stood back as the mountain man ushered his old friend to the afterworld as gently as possible. He sat like that for nearly an hour, whispering kind things into his dying friend's ear. He held his hand like he was his only brother.

He loved to tell how, when he got to the bottom of the stairs, there would always be a big clot of people around the window in front of me, and the people in that crowd would be remarking about my size. Dad would stick his thumbs under his suspenders, pulling them away from his chest to show it swelling with pride and say:

“Yeah, That one’s mine!”

(A little setup: main character is at a neighborhood barbecue and is getting to know some of the local kids his age - tween to early teen ages)

It was then that a taller woman in a long yellow dress came up to us. Her hair seemed to bounce with every step she took until she towered over all of us. She gave me a polite smile then she turned to the twins. “Douglas, Francis, come help me set the tables please.”

“Mom...” Fang whined as he shook his head while keeping it low. “...we're going by Fang and Pinball!”

“Last month you two were named Turbo and Diesel. And the month before that it was Axle and Shock.” The woman sighed and rolled her eyes. “Look, y'all can call yourselves pretty-pink-princess-twinkle-toes for all I care! Come help me, set, the tables!” None of us dared to say anything as she crossed her arms and stared down the twins. Almost immediately the twins huffed and shuffled towards a couple of wood picnic tables

After the tall, skinny, and red-headed Mr. Jones was led by a “trusty” into the interview room - where Bill and Dix sat waiting - they could not have been more surprised at his appearance, given his name.

From my current Sci-Fi manuscript...

Glancing across the hangar while shifting to a conspiratorial tone, Rex asked, “Bit of a sidebar—I’ve heard some interesting rumors, but what exactly did you do to make the Major General get such a stick up his ass about you?”

Julia grinned and said, “I unintentionally made him look stupid in a meeting a few years back before this assignment. It was a basic aerodynamic theory mistake he made on a chalkboard presentation to his senior officers that I was invited to and all I did was point out the error in a formula he had mangled. The man’s a purported expert but not so much from what I have seen. Anyway, he’s not particularly the forgiving type.”

Rex gave a nod of understanding and said, “Ah, otherwise known as a prick!”

Here is one I enjoy.

In the stillness of a Sunday morning, a mirror is ushered into the house at Green Way Street at the strike of 11:11 AM.

From my superhero fic, one character has the abilities to read minds, but because of a curse, he hears people's thoughts at random.

Preston had continued to wander and was now by a bookcase. “Oh, about ten.”

“Excuse me?”

“Oh, I thought you thought what time it was,” Preston said.

“No,” I said.

“Oh. Must be someone outside. It’s so hard to tell. People’s real voice don’t match the one in their head. Nobody thinks about that, you know. But I basically have to match two voices to one face.”

I always found it interesting that people have a different inter voice than the one they speak with.

We sat in silence for several minutes as the loud spatter of rainfall echoed within
the car. It felt somehow different sitting there now, as though some new barrier now existed between us; one that only I could perceive. Glancing over toward Mum as she stared out the car window, lost in her own thoughts, I found it difficult to distinguish between her apparent self- protective detachment from the situation and my growing perception that her reaction may instead have been born from some hidden coldness within her heart. I quickly snapped out of it. I couldn’t allow myself to think that way. Yet, to observe her now, like some aged, tragic ingénue from a Fitzgerald novel, I couldn’t help but sense a broader naivety; that within her lay some atrophied indifference to a world that had been constructed by others around her.

As Mindy walked over to the cash register where Kerrie was handling payments for customers, both Margie and Dix independently noticed how well her robust legs filled out his jeans, giving them a look that the designers of male apparel probably never envisioned. Her rump attainments also filled out the denim most appropriately. Coupled with the close fit of the stretchy knit fabric of the shirt over her nakedness underneath, the overall effect was stunning.

Mindy chatted with Kerrie for a few moments after she had finished with her customers and then made her way back to the table with a smile on her face. Several sets of eyeballs (both sexes) followed her the entire way back.

DAG! You are really good at articulating moments people really have....but can't articulate!

Current or in the past, what are your best lines? This is a little less restrictive than "your first 3 lines" or "last line you wrote today." Choose something from anywhere in anything you've ever written and take your best shot.

Here's one I'm rather fond of to get this started.
Gotta love robots who say "ponied"

From my WIP:

The sound of her name on Grace’s lips was sweet torture. Like having a splinter removed or lancing an infected hangnail.

"If I do one day find evidence of the supernatural, my immediate action will be admitting myself to an insane asylum. I will not go so far as to suggest the same for you, but do know that it exists as an option."

Her husband was going to get quite a ride when she got home in the morning; she hoped he was up to it, because her plush body was a bundle of nerves as she made her way down the hallway toward the elevators by the ladies’ room.
