Rae

Hey, everybody!

My name's Rae, and I'm new to this message board. Glad to be here, and glad to see all of these passionate writers sharing ideas!

I was just offered a contract by a Mr. Tom Lee, Literary Agent at Communications Management Associates in Rockford, IL. It seems to be a pretty standard contract, but I can't seem to find any information on him at all. I plan to call him and have a chat, but I was just wondering if anyone here has heard anything at all about him. In the "Novel and Short Story Writer's Market" directory I have, he's listed as primarily a screenplay agent, but it doesn't list his sales.

Anyone? Any help at all would be exceedingly welcome, since I'm brand new at this! I'd love to have him as my first agent, but the fact that he's not listed anywhere makes me a little nervous...

Thanks so much!

Rae

Rae, check out the "General tips about identifying/dealing with scammers" thread http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=522 . If you decide talk to this person, make sure you ask him for a list of clients. If he won't give you one, take it as a bad sign. If he does, check it and make sure it's legit--scammers have given out fake client lists before. If at any time you don't like what you're hearing--well, a bad agent is worse than no agent.

Good luck.

Rae -

Why did you even query him if you knew nothing about him or his agency?

How did you even find him to query him?

It's good to be nervous, Rae. Mr. Lee may be a great screen agent, but if he can't give you a list of authors he's represented, you would do well to look elsewhere. Check this out on how to find an agent: http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/2005/01/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about.asp

Writer Beware has gotten a number of inquiries lately about Tom Lee and CMA (some from writers who were contacted more than a year after querying). In the late 1990's, CMA (a.k.a. CMALA) was on many "beware" lists for fee-charging, but I didn't hear anything about it for several years, and assumed it was out of business. Apparnetly not.

Agencies that engage in questionable practices usually don't change their stripes. Also, I'm not aware that CMA/CMALA ever made any sales.

I'm amuzed that the only mention I find of him now is at Firstwriter (toward the bottom of the side bar). To wit: in July 2005 he moved to the west coast to pursue other projects. Doesn't look like he's taken up agenting again; at least not under permutations of previous names.
