I am reading Mary Karr's first memoir "The liar's club" for the first time after reading her excellent "The Art of Memoir" and I have to say I'm shocked. She talks to the reader in what she calls in her how to book as colluding with the reader. I don't know how I feel about this because I always thought that to address the reader was verboten. I was curious about how other's felt about talking directly to the reader in any book, but especially memoir and if any of the writers here have done it. Thank you
