Speaking of Silver King, last week I was close to the area where the infamous Charlie the alligator resides. This is most likely not him, but still an impressive beast for sure.

I want to share this photo too, taken at the same preserve as the gator.

I watched this Great Blue Heron for a little while as he tried to figure out how to swallow his oversized catch.

True, cool fact:

Alligators' ancestors had feathers.

Crocodilians are the closest living relatives of birds. Both evolved from feathered archosaurs.

Crocodilians still have the genes to produce feathers embedded in their skin.

All is fine and dandy until a child gets eaten...

I am not for killing gators and I DO understand that it is humans who are encrouching on their territority, but a grieving parent is not going to agree with us...

Pretty sure they don't eat very many kids.

First time I saw a gator in the wild I was on a boardwalk on Jekyll Island Georgia. I had no idea then there was this movement in the water next to the boardwalk, and there he was, a real live gator and I was alone there on the boardwalk.

Nothing happened. I walked past the gator. Before my exploring the southwest was over I found myself in the Okefenokee Swamp, learning that the rangers use push poles when they are in the water with the gators. That's all they needed to be safe. They did say fisherfolk were often careless and that resulted in encounters.

I met a couple, they had canoed across the swamp. Takes three days and you have to sign up years ahead because only one canoe can launch each day during the season. They left their keys in the car on the other side of the swamp where they'd launched from. I gave them a ride back to their other vehicle. So worth it, not just because you help people that need help, but because I got to hear about their canoe trip. You have to make it to the next platform every night. They went through some kind of gator rookery. Eyes and more eyes. So wish I could have taken that trip in my lifetime. But I shared their trip and I remember it to this day.

I hear crocodiles are more dangerous than alligators. I am no longer afraid of gators.
