Are there certain words one has to avoid in MG fiction? I assume there are lots but specifically are there any that are particularly inappropriate like "damn" and "shit" etc.?? Or am I just overthinking this?

As a sub, one time in fifth grade one of the items was to read Bridge to Terabetha to the class. I assume the teacher knew the kind of language in that book. And that one of the major characters dies in it.

I do think inappropriate language would limit sales.

Curse words in MG seem like a major no no. Granted I'm working off of books I read as a kid and the more recent stuff I read has been animal fantasy, but I've never seen bad language in MG books. The worst it gets is in something like Redwall, where the clear villain characters might drop a "hell" or two. "Shit" would be a big deal.

Though thinking back, I remember being 7 and giggling at the word "toilet." So it's entirely possible I read really tame stuff.

I'd definitely leave out the curse words as well.
