I'm doing some research on one of this press' authors and I'm having trouble figuring out if they're traditional, self-publishing, POD, what have you. Their manuscript guidelines are really vague, don't give figures, and don't say what precisely they want. Preditors and editors has nothing on them. Basically I just need to know what kind of publisher they are, but if you have any other info, I'd love to know that too. Thanks!

Blue Dolphin is a vanity publisher. Writers I've heard from report paying between $10,000 and $20,000.

Blue Dolphin's twist on vanity publishing is that it doesn't ask authors for an upfront fee--it asks them if they know anyone who'd be willing to "invest" in the publication of their book. As a result, it's often not just the writers who are out of pocket--it's their friends and relatives too.

I've also heard from writers who say BD doesn't even print books--it uses POD--and that they haven't received the royalties due them. Here's what seems to be a typical complaint.
