This film was made a coulpe of years ago , but is now on release in the UK . It has receved numerous five- star revews , and is exspected to win all the major awards . We all have our own tastes , but I could not see what everyone was raving about . The actors sat like manakins and diliverd an endless stram of stilted dialoge. The story was fragnented and unbelivable and overall , a dull and boring film .

I was doing some sewing last night and put on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Had to turn it off after 20 minutes. It was that bad, sorry Harry Potter fans! I hated the English sense of class that was so deeply embedded in it, all the boarding school tropes, the stupid plot holes, the stupid costumes. I know it's a touchstone for a lot of young adults now but I don't think it's aged well.

Recently watched Best of Enemies (2015), an entertaining (if kinda sad) documentary about the ten days of debates between William F. Buckley, Jr., and Gore Vidal that aired on ABC during the 1968 Republican and Democratic conventions, in Miami and Chicago respectively.

I think it's no exaggeration, given the vast amount of public attention to those debates, and the drama between those two men that unfolded in the media afterwards, to point to that time as an inflection point in the history of television. It was the moment when talking heads went from being neutral purveyors of agreed-upon factual news or information, to being used by the networks as entertainment to get ratings. As Jon Stewart said on air many years later, "You're not doing debate! You're doing theatre."

As a followup, I'm reading the collected essays of Gore Vidal—a brilliantly witty wordsmith if ever there was one. After that, I'm gonna read Neil Postman's acclaimed Amusing Ourselves to Death.

And... last night's turkey for Bad Movie Night was: Thanks Killing. Made for a budget of about $5 and it shows. Take my advice: Don't. Watch. This. Movie. Spare your brain cells. Or at least lay down a protective layer of mind-altering substances first. And do not under any circumstances try to apply logic or critical judgement. It is what it is, unfortunately.

Really?! I haven't seen it yet, but it's definitely on my watch list. Multiple splatter reviewers have praised it as not only a hilariously bad movie, but in fact a parody of hilariously bad movies. I'm a huge splatter fan: the gorier, the sillier, the lower the budget, the better. And nudge-nudge wink-wink comedy is fine with me—so long as there are buckets of blood. I like what I read about how it plays with hoary tropes like the Ancient Book That Will Banish the Demons. And it's puppet horror! I do love me some goofy puppet monsters.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me about ThanksKilling (all one word). Just the right time to watch it. I checked, and unfortunately it's not on Shudder. 'Seems perfect for one of Joe Bob's Turkey Day marathons. 'Have to watch it on Prime.

It was a great Bad Movie for watching with a group. We saw it on The Roku Channel, I think -- there were a bunch of places that had it free when we looked. Amusing to contrast the high-quality acting & production values in the ads to our main feature...

Because I'm a sucker for a Black Friday bargain, I purchased Nope on Amazon Prime for $1.99 aaaaaaand, I got my money's worth.

I liked it, but I didn't think it was particularly scary. One flashback scene had my wife covering her eyes and I was a little squicked out by it, but otherwise, Nope is fine. Easily the least of Jordan Peele's films between Get Out and Us.

The jury's still out. The first Terrifier was widely considered to be torture porn, so I gave it a pass. Some reviewers say the sequel's weirder and thus more fun, so it's def caught my attention. J'aime l'absurde.

Torture porn is the only category of extreme gore I don't consume.

I'm up for anything and everything to be done to human bodies. Any amount of unrealistic/surrealistic ruby fluids & squishy tissue & crunchy bone. Any level of cheezy-crazy monster shit. Any creepomatic death-obsessed darkness.

But I'm picky about emotional tone. I want splatter to make me happy. Which isn't hard to do. All I need is lots of red splashy stuff. I have 50 years of practice in smiling, laughing, and hooting 'n' hollering while watching splatter. I'm cool with bad effects, bad acting, bad whatever. I can be happy when terrified, disgusted, horrified, or squicked. I'm solid on the difference between fiction and reality, so it's OK if characters on the screen are expressing the full gamut of their emotional/physical pain.

It gets tricky with overt sadism, though. What I mean by sadism is that the movie is trying very hard to manipulate me into being inside of the characters' pain. Sadism is OK as a spice, like a few habanero peppers in a big dish. But if the story depends too much on outright torture, if the filmmaker seems mean-spirited, I'm outta there.

So I've only watched a couple of the Saw movies. Sorry, not my thing. No humor to be found in torture porn.

Just watched The Outfit with Mark Rylance. (This is not the Richard Stark story.) Rylance’s character runs a bespoke men’s wear shop used as a dead drop by mobsters, and finds himself having to fight for his life with no weapon sharper than his wits. Great fun; twisty plot. Loved the look of the film, which takes place almost entirely in the shop.

The script feels like an adaptation of a stage play, but according to Wiki, it’s an original.

Watched "5-25-77" last night, a movie about the first person in the world who saw Star Wars outside Lucasfilm. I've waited about 16 years to see this. First heard about it around 2005 or 2006. It was shot way back then and has been in post-production hell so long most people probably forgot about it. I'd hear about it every couple years, then there was nothing for a long time. I thought this movie would never come out, then a couple months ago out of the blue they announced a small release and a blu ray. I actually really enjoyed it! It's not just about Star Wars, it's a movie about being a sci fi geek and making movies. Steven Spielberg is a small character. You get to see how special effects are done on old movies like "2001" and "Close Encounters". The MC was inspired to make his own movies and went on to become a director (he made "Spaced Invaders" and "Dragonheart"). It was filmed around Gurnee, IL, about an hour from where I grew up, and you can see Six Flags in the background of a lot of shots. Anyway, if you love Star Wars and movie making I'd recommend this. General public and non-geeks probably won't be interested.

Watched Enola Holmes 2. Fun YA fare, definitely on the light side. I rolled my eyes at the numerous galloping anachronisms, until I had a Glass Houses epiphany: Someone who moved the Married Woman’s Property Act from 1882 to 1832, and had Henry Cavendish do the work of Robert Goddard one hundred years earlier (which would have been possible, as surprising as that may seem) is in no position to fault the liberties the Enola Holmes stories take with history.

Just a watched a movie called Fall. Wouldn't recommend it to people who suffer with acrophobia but not bad at all.
Had a minor trouble with my firestick while watching it, but found quickly the solution here and could continue streaming as it was before. Would love to see more movies based on the true stories in the future, cause i figured out i love those.

I LOVED the first Enchanted Movie (Amy Adam's, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel). Last movie I watched was the sequel, Disenchanted, which had the original cast plus Maya Rudolph.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
I haven't seen it in such a long time so I decided I'd rewatch it. It did not disappoint.

Bullet Train is now on Netflix (oh, yeah, that's why I have an account), and as I liked Kotaro Isaka's other novels, I wondered how they might have adapted this. It alternates between outlandish/cheeky and surprisingly somber, but it also feels like it could have been a trim 90 minutes instead of an exhausting two hours. Worth seeing once.

Just watched Four Good Days with Glenn Close and Mila Kunis (who I didn't know anything about other than I thought she was some celeb girlfriend). Both actors are excellent and the movie was better than I expected, mostly because it's new and I'd heard so little about it. If I'd known it was "inspired" by a true story, I probably would have felt different about the ending, but as it was I was tense wondering what would happen. The role of doctors and Oxy for her original addiction hit such a sad and compelling truth. Biggest surprise was Stephen Root. I thought that was him but then dismissed it. Ha.

I once lived across the street from a drug house, and kicked myself for not dropping a dime on the dealer who showed up so regularly, though the house did get busted at one point, to no avail. Watched my neighbor OD (out of view behind a van) and be resuscitated with Narcan. Watching him and his brother deteriorate over a couple of years was heartbreaking.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
I haven't seen it in such a long time so I decided I'd rewatch it. It did not disappoint.

That was one of those movies nobody expected anything from, and it ended up being a homerun. Then the formula got retreaded until it turned repellent. But oh, what a lovely beginning.

The Fabelmans. A movie about movies, and loving movies, and loving people (which is much harder). Also the origin story of Steven Spielberg. It's not a Great Movie, but a good one.

Just rewatched Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and a penny dropped that did not the first time: There’s only a countable infinity of universes in that MVerse. You can’t even get a decent form of quantum mechanics to work in something that impoverished!

Did, however, admire the eye candy the second time around. I had forgotten how deafening the soundtrack was at any reasonable volume setting.

Watched Tár last night. OMG what a brilliant flick! If Cate Blanchett doesn't win her second Best Actress Oscar for this performance, it will be a grave injustice. I'm gonna watch it again tonight before my 48-hour streaming rental expires. And I'm consulting local theatre listings to see if there's somewhere I can see it on the big screen. It's that good.
