Are cleft palates hereditary or is it just a random deformity?

Thanks

Apparently the majority of cases are not genetically based, according to the Hospital for Sick Childrens Cleft Lip and Palate specialists. I googled cleft palate and that one was the one I found easiest to understand. Google Toronto Hospital for Sick Children and get more detail.( sorry forgot to get you a link :[ )

Is very helpful with pix--the condition is due to an incomplete growth of bone and tissue that can extend in severity to the back of the throat and up into the nasal cavity.

There are specific genetic mutations associated with cleft palate. Also, exposure to alcohol and some medications in utero has been associated with cleft palate. There are also racial predilections--I think it's most common in Native Americans and Pacific Islanders, least common in African Americans.
