Italics in Manuscripts

I've read some manuscript guidelines that say to underline words in a manuscript to indicate italics. Since some guidlines don't specify this, I was wondering if this was a generally accepted practice.

Yes, underlines instead of italics is standard.

Here's why:

Underlines make it easier for the copyeditor and others to make notes--there's more room below/above the line.
