C'mon in, the water's fine!

We're in the third month of a get healthy blitz.

This thread for the folks using the March Health thread who wish to continue and for newcomers who want to work on any health issues--weight loss, smoking cessation, more exercise--and want a place to get and give support and report on progress. Everyone is welcome.

I think I'm going to try amputation as a method of weight loss. It beats the alternative, which is sitting around on your own, feeling very, very hungry.

Thanks for the invite! I'm in.

My doctor wants me to get more exercise so that's what I'm working on. I will do more walking. I'm also trying to give up junk food.

Okay, the posts on some of the other threads had me feeling really guilty that I'm not exercising enough (or at all). So I'm going to jump in this month and see if I can get some sort of exercise routine into shape.

The goal: Exercise everyday. That's it. Simple. No complications. Two sit-ups counts, too. :D

Oh dear God the year's slipping away and I still have a butt the size of Canada.

It was supposed to be all sorted now.
If I was a shop I'd demand my money back.

Hi gang! As I mentioned in the March thread, I reached my goal of 225lbs this morning! So here we go again. To reiterate: I need to lose an average of nine pounds a month to get down to 170lbs by my birthday in October. So, by the end of April, I want to be at 216lbs.

I've been running a mile a day, eating healthy, and it's not easy!

:D

But it works, I've lost 20 pounds and can see the slim old me!

LOL...

Stop smoking? Oh gee let's not even go there!

*Sparks up a cigarette*

I have to keep some bad habit!

Richard, just exactly what are you going to amputate? Your arms so you can't eat? Gosh, that's goonna make it hard to write isn't it? Starving, or feeling like you are isn NOT good. Just start slow, heck if you just cut, say one cola a day (Melina?) you're going to cut over 100 calories (sorry I don't know the exact number of calories in a soda, all we have are diet drinks). In a week's time that's at least 700 calories, in five weeks that's a pound.

Now, I know losing weight at that speed isn't gonna work, but you can keep adding what you cut out, or back on, and slowly change your eating habits and soon you'll find yourself losing weight and not feeling deprived.

One of the 'baby steps' my husband and I took a few years ago was cutting down, or eliminating the egg yolk. A whole egg has something like 91 calories, the egg white only about 18. So since we had fresh eggs he has an omelet with 5 egg whites, and one whole egg, giving him about 190 calories for his main breakfast dish. He used to eat omelets made with 4 whole eggs, almost 400 calories. One little change and he cut his calories in half. When he first started it was 1 whole, 1 white. He kept changing the ratio until he reached his current formula. I have started leaving the yolk out all together when I fix mine.

I know the 'diet specialists' say have a two egg white omelet. Well, excuse me but 2 egg whites aren't enough to fill anybody up.

Remember, you can come here anytime, that's what Good Word started this thread for, so we could support each other. Good luck.

Renee, running a mile a day sounds good to me. One thing at a time, eat heathly get in shape then consider if you want to give up smoking. My family thinks my addiction to the cooler is a vice. If you run out of vices you can always count that one.

Heck Kit, even one situp counts.

Rhyme - welcome to the fray, the more the merrier.

Cute Chuck - wahoo, way to go. Gonna take the wife out dancing for your birthday to show off your new slim, svelte figure?

"Got svelte?" Gotta love it! :)

I'm going to set a goal for myself for April. I want to lose 5 pounds. I think it's do-able. I will follow the WW flex plan without going too far off of it. (I haven't been a very good Jen as far as that goes this week or last.) And back & weather providing, I will exercise more. (I prefer to go to the track & walk when the weather's cooperative.)

My immediate goal is to get rid of this blasted cold.

In the interest of getting over this cold and thus getting healthier, I broke down & went to the doctor today.

It's no cold. Well, it's partly a cold. But it's also "mild" bronchitis. How fun. So... Maybe (hopefully) this will start to clear up now.

I was thinking of my stomach. Kill two birds with one stone. Just have a bag to catch anything you eat, and you get all the fun of doing so without ever gaining a single pound. And the reduced life expectancy is great if you consider all the fatty foods you'll get to eat in the meantime.

Chips Ahoy! Let the April Health Work Begin!

Ta-dah! Let the thread officially begin! (hits gong, curtsies)

I did my first full WW day yesterday and did pretty well. Worked out too. I need to up my stairmaster intake this month.

A true story that Rich reminded me of:

When I was in the recovery room, a short while after giving birth via c-section, I asked the nurses what the placenta weighed, so I could approximate my immediate weight loss. Ew, yuck, grody! The nurses thought it was hysterical, and immediately obliged me by weighing it. They said no one had ever asked them before. However, I was so groggy I don't remember the answer.

Dang.

Maestro, you're not supposed to EAT while in the hot tub. Besides, bet on you six pounds looks sexy. You could find a way to give 'em to Mike, I think he WANTS to gain weight. (sigh, if only)

It's all well and good dieting, but if it's just going to pile back on what's the point?

Now that's an appetite killer...

I recently turned vegetarian, so here's hopin' my spare tire'll go rollin' off as far away from me as it possibly can.

As for quitting smoking, **** that. I'm a writer, not an Apostle.

And Good Word: on the subject of appetites and placentas, I've got some fabulous placenta recipes should you so desire them :D

Ohh, this all brings back some happy memories. My daughter was just shy of 10lbs, and they asked if they could keep the placenta for studies as it was the largest one anyone had ever seen.

Ahh, a doubly happy day....

ON the edge of the insane feral.
Well, I think I will jump in this month. I am an insulin dependant diabetic--been one for 38 years with very very good control. (and no losing weight will not help in my case with the insulin dependancy -- that's type two non-insulin dependant who can take pills--their bodies still make insulin just not enough.)

Now the last few months I have been having a horrible time sticking to my diet, or any of it--maybe I am just tired of it. Sigh. I've gained a ton of weight--so yes I need to lose some ( a lot) But i need to get back on the right road of diabetic care.

So my goal is to lose weight, doc says 2 to 3 pounds a week, (boy I’d like to loose more) and get back on my regime of diabetic care with no lapses.

Here's a good site to monitor diet and stuff: http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/Index.html

Good luck with that, Shawn. My dearly departed mother in law was diabetic and it certainly took an effort to keep everything under control. She lived with us for the last five years of her life, so I got to see first hand what it takes, at least as close a look as a non-diabetic is likely to get.

Good luck to everyone this month! And don't forget to keep exercising those writing/typing fingers!

Hope everyone doesn't mind if I join in. Congratulations to all who have been losing weight, exercising, and eating properly.

I decided after reading the thread I needed to get in here and admit that I'm trying very hard to quit smoking. I know, nasty habit and with my medical condition you'd think I wouldn't have a problem quitting.

My doctor has been after me for a few years to quit. Now it has become an order. It's been something I've been "trying" way too long.

I leave my cigarettes in a different room, go outside to smoke, put off smoking for 20 minutes after the need, and I've even divided the pack into five neat little stacks allowing myself only four cigarettes a day. I've gone through all the local Wal-Mart’s gum, suckers, and hard candy. Can't use the Nicorette gum or patches due to stroke possibilities.

Today, I put a full unopened carton on top of my freezer. I stare at it now and then, walk away and when the urge hits, I stare again.

Today, I have not smoked one cigarette.

Please, yell at me at least four times a day.

Joanne, don't smoke!

Thank you. :)

But smoking's so delightfully refreshing (and existentially charming!).

I need to quit, too, but I'm still in my Honeymoon stage w/ mah ciggies, so I know it ain't happenin' anytime soon.

Joanne, don't smoke. Yeah, we know you want to, but don't.

I quit. It was a b----, too, but it can be done by people whose will power falls way short of legendary.

How can we best help you?

(It's silly, but when the urge to smoke became strong, holding my breath for as long as I could helped the urge to pass. Free, too!)
