path of glass

Walk this way
as if by treading
like a waterless
sea creature
limping upon
new-formed feet and toes
we understand the loss
of a home.

Tiny shards,
pieces of the whole,
fallen
crystal angels,
languish on the pavement
and like tiny mirrors
reflect the moments
just before the crash.
A memory of life.

shattered
and I among
the shards
red,
victimized by
each slivered
second I
lie among
destruction.

one foot by two, framed gold
rococo swirls and loops,
he carried it wherever he went
wrapped in a paper bag under his arm.

one day his grip grew weak,
the mirror fell and shattered
but he gathered the shards
and pieced it whole again.

one foot by two, framed gold
rococo swirls and loops,
they stood side by side in the light
just as his yesterdays remembered.

ugly, nightmarish crash
stole your effervescence
used it to reflect vibrant color
but only a pale imitation of you

And I, like seals among the bergs,
dodge shards and barbs and
angry words.

My flesh as fragile as my ears,
my soul as steadfast
as my fears.

Encountered close, I note each edge
is rounded as a
childproof ledge.

There was no snare, no harm was meant,
by friends disguised as
light dissent.

I rolled the shard in my fingers
then pondered
as blood and glass mixed
I rolled a joint
and marveled how adept I was
at pleasing the pot-heads
I rolled out at dawn
and worried about a missed
bathroom stop
I roiled over
the little things
I rolled around in my mind
I broiled over
hot emotional flames
that licked up glass and blood
