For direct sales, I can see a problem if I put both the US dollar amount and the Canadian and UK amount as I often see on traditionally published books.

Namely, if I live in the US, I need to get the US amount via a US bank. If I get a "Canadian" check, I am charged a fee for processing that is almost as much as I'm selling the book for.

So, as a self-publisher doing direct sales, I need to only put the US amount, correct? And the best way to get payment from non-US buyers is via a bank-to-bank transfer, in my mind. Am I seeing this correctly?

Not sure if this will help or not. I live in Canada and have had some cash transactions in the states.

In my experience, I have not been able to do bank to bank transfers between countries. Our banking system is completely different than yours. I usually have to get a US money order from my bank and mail it to whomever in the states. Credit card transactions are different, but you probably won't be dealing with those.

You canot cash in a cheque written in Canada at a bank in the states. it has to be a US money order. There shouldn't be a fee for you, it is paid on the initiating end.

On another note, you can get a Canadian traveler's cheque and most casinos and banks in the states will cash it. Bit of a long work around though.

The only reason I would suggest posting the Canadian sales figure is to encourage all buyers, not just Americans.

Hi and thanks. But if I put the Canadian sales figure, I worry I'll get a Canadian check. But then again, I have in the back of the book a website to go to to order books, and I figure I could put there about US Money Orders. hmmmmmm

Nancy,
I haven't experienced this yet myself, but I'm thinking you can find the answer at parapublishing.com. Dan Poynter travels literally around the world every year speaking and selling. If you can't find anything on the site, try emailing him. He's really good about answering quick questions like this.

Also, you probably know this but just in case, if you aren't selling in person, if people can buy at your site, paypal handles all of the major currencies just like a regular merch account.

I was thinking PayPal too. Or some other form of online payment system. Clickbank and other affiliate programs also allow you to take credits cards. In both cases the exchange is automatic, so you don't get charged a fee not matter what currency the people originally use.
