I've looked online for this but my Google-fu is lacking tonight. What is the name for a shop that sells swords, crafted knives, fencing foils and such? Is there a name for it, or is it just called a sword shop?

Modern day or historical? I've seen knife shops, but very few which sell working swords. Historically, I'd think a blacksmith's shop or an armory.

That's a good question right now.
Depends. What era and region are you looking for?

Blacksmith, swordsmith, armorer/armourer are all acceptable terms for individuals who made or make weapons or armor.

Sorry, modern day. I should have specified. I've seen shops in big cities where one can purchase swords, fencing equipment, specialised knives and such. Can't think what the type of shop is called though.

Only places, modern-day, that I've seen selling swords are at Renaissance festivals and in catalogues. Sorry.

There are a few round here.

Just sword shops, no special name really, unless they are selling antiques, when they are, well, antique weapons shops. Bah, that sounds so boring. Call them Slash And Hack shops. :)

Cutler is the guy who makes your domestic cutlery: knives, forks, spoons etc.

I'd go with armourer

You can go to a hunting/fishing shop for knives--maybe even a few of the outdoor shops (millets in UK for example).

As for re-enactment weapons you can go to fairs and pick them up or go to a re-enactment group and they should have contacts were you can go. As for shops, as far as I know, there are none that I have come across.

Where I live (BC) there is a franchise operation that sells swords as well as knives and general cutlery. It's called "The House of Knives" and yes that does sound like a grade B horror movie.

The swords they sell the most of are the fantasy stuff (Lord of the Rings, Kiligon. stuff etc. I did pick up a very nice replica of a two handed crusader sword. Nice balance about 3 1/2 lbs, good steel, takes a wonderful edge.

In Fort Lauderdale, we have semi-annual gun and knife shows which I find have the best variety and selection of authentic blades of all kinds - custom and antique. That's where I buy all mine.
I never buy replicas. A bladesman cherishes the heart and soul of the weapon. Asian swords have an event bible on the hilt under the grip which becomes almost a spiritual bond between the bladesman and the sword.

Americans used knotches.

I think it all depends on context. It's not like a butcher shop or a bakery. What do you call a store that sells guns? It depends how and why you're referring to it.

There was a store in the mall where I was growing up that sold swords as well as knives, model cars, and some other collectibles called Excalibur Cutlery. I've also seen swords sold in retail shops at stores with "Collectibles" in the name, as well as "Antique," "Collector," and "Hobby."

It could also be referred to as "that place where the pony-tail trenchcoat guys hang out."

If I were having a character buy a sword in the modern day that was "battle ready", they'd go to Badger Blades. And if my character wasn't able to get a sword at the Ren Fest, they'd order one from the internet.

I've also seen swords being sold at craft shows/fairs, sporting goods department or store, antique shops, and other stores that try going for a "outdoorsy" feel. Mostly, I've just seen various knives, throwing stars, sometimes a katana or two, and replicas of swords from different movies.

I've seen some cane-swords being sold at Bastille Days in Milwaukee. Out on the street. They cost around $70. I have no idea if they were battle-ready or not, but you had to be over 18 to buy one.

Depends on what kind of swords: A number of shops sell fencing swords, and some malls had Merlo's (sp?) sell replicas. Some pawn shops and antique
stores also carry them. It's just a matter of knowing what you are looking for...
