I never was much good with numbers but I'm getting worse.

Is it

10 year-old
ten year-old
10-year old
ten-year old
10 year old
ten year old?

Any/all/none of the above?

Any (simple) explanation as to why would be appreciated so I'll know next time.

I've been told not to use numerals unless very large numbers.

You cannot "say" 10 or 50 they are symbols, you can "say" ten or fifty.

What do you mean by "say", are you referring to dialogue, or am I just confusing myself even more?

So far I've got it down to one of the options with the word ten in it. Any ideas how to whittle it down further?

I'd tend to go with Sandi's choice, which wasn't even on the list, but I don't know why.

Sorry, I didn't make that too clear, yes I was referring to dialogue.

A character can look at, or see an address that reads 10th street. If it is spoken (dialogue) it would be "Tenth Street"

I write out numbers under three digits.

Ten year-old.

I've looked back and found I've used this one as well as Sandi's.
Maybe I'll just keep age out of it in future.

Ten-year-old. Ten year-old suggests one has ten in quantity.

Ten-year-old is correct.

I was taught at school to always spell in full numbers under ten.

That's brilliant, Bufty. I get it now :D
All I've got to do now is think of a way of getting those ten one-year olds out of my story.
