Well, it's not the worst I've gotten. Found this waiting in my email queue:

Dear Sharon Cullars:

Thank you for sending us "A Bowl of Soup." The story didn't work for us, but we wish you well on finding it a home. Another editor may well snap up this story, which we sincerely wish for you. We thank you too for your interest in StoryQuarterly, which validates the commitment, even passion, we have for good fiction and promoting it. We hope you'll continue to think of us for your work and wish you the best of luck—in writing, in loving and in living.

Sincerely, Editors, SQ

Obviously, their HTML wasn't working. Too bad. For them, for me. :o

Hey, sorry to hear that Scullars. On the bright side, it's a really, really nice rejection letter. And they probably reserve the line, "Another editor may well snap up this story," for the better submissions.

Send it again. Who knows, another editor might just snap it up!

If you're going to get a rejection, that's the kind to get. That was very nice of the editor to take time to write such a nice note. Most rejections come in the form of a generic form letter or no answer at all.

Good luck with your story.

Thanks guys. I actually wasn't expecting an acceptance, but wanted to get used to submitting my work, which I've been either too cowardly or lax about.
