I truly enjoyed Uhura's Song - yeah, the original character was a total Mary Sue, but she was one of the Mary Sues who sort of worked, and there was a lot of great characterization for the entire Enterprise crew, not to mention a unique and fascinating alien culture to explore. I remember her work fondly and am sorry to hear she's gone.

If you read her notes on Uhura's Song, Janet wrote that the character of Evan was based very strongly on Janet's mother. She had a third book, Mirabile, as well as some wonderful short fiction. (Including one Hugo-winner.)

She was also kind enough to give me some very good advice and support when I was still a struggling newbie.
