I can give you some tips on how not to procrastinate, but I'm in school so I'll post when I get home.

Top Ways I procrastinate
1) novel instead of hw
2) TV instead of novel OR hw
3) reading books instead of hw
4) talking on phone instead of novel OR hw
5) Instant messaging while working on hw and/or novel simultaneously
6) AW instead of novel OR hw
7) Yahoo Answers instead of novel or hw

There's probably more, but I cant think, and bell is going to ring soon. Might post later

I can play this game
1) surfing around other writers blogs - this is under the form of research.
2) checking e-mail
3) Going to the gym (good? yes. procrastinating? yes)
4) chatting in chatrooms with other writers about writing.
5) snacking
6) working - Ha - necessary, but still I could multitask.
7) playing with the dog
8) doing Laundry - again- necessary.
9) watching TV or reading.
10) napping.

Not in order of frequency.

1. Surfing the web (forums mostly)
2. Writing responses on forums
3. Getting something to drink.
4. Getting something to eat.
5. Staring blankly at computer screen while trying to come up with the perfect sentence rather than simply writing.
6. Rewriting character bio's
7. Fleshing out synopsis to level of ridiculous detail.
8. Thinking about another project that I am also working on.
9. Lying down to clear head.
10. Finding appropriate music to listen to (or trying to decide whether I should listen to music or write in silence).

4. Snacking
5. Spending too long on AW forums
6. Thinking up plot twists I know I'll never use
7. Randomly flicking about on wikipedia...........I call it research anyway
8. Playing guitar
9. Playing with the cats
10. Playing with the horses

My ways:
1) convince myself that they're be time to do it tomorrow (I don't take much convincing)
2) wait till tomorrow
3) - 10) repeat 1) and 2) four more times.

Nice thread, DWS! Ahh procrastination... the bane of the writer's existence.

My top 10?

1. Check email. Go back to draft and stare, maybe write a sentence. check email. Lather, rinse, repeat.
2. TV. I'll turn it on, flip through, and find something semi-interesting. Two hours later, I wonder why I got sucked in when I can't remember the plot of the first show.
3. Videogames. ahhh... blame my husband for this one!
4. The aforementioned husband. He's pretty good about letting me write, but he likes affection and he's definitely interesting enough to distract from my wips
5. Freecell/popcap games, etc.
6. Agent blogs
7. AW. definitely AW
8. Myspace, livejournal, facebook. I tend to procrastinate by blogging sometimes
9. downloading music. usually to inspire my writer's muse.
10. If I'm really desperate to not write, I get distracted by things around the house that need cleaning.

hey, some of these could actually be considered productive...

Yeah, so my solution to avoid procrastination is usually to hide in my bedroom and turn off the router. Haven't tried it yet, but I will if I go too long without meeting my daily word count requirements :)

1) making/drinking vast quantities of tea from a pint mug
2) rolling ciggies
3) reading/posting on AW / other writer sites. It's good for my writing, yes?
4) reading books. Research, honest! Ok the Chris Jericho bio isn't really research for a fantasy novel, but I call it that, it makes me feel better.
5) Walking the dog
6) Imagining scenes that I know will never ever make it to the final version.
7) Bath, with lots of bubbles.
8) Sleeping. Hey if I don't have at least three catnaps during the day, I don't have enough energy for my main evening snooze
9) Winding up the Old Man/ jumping Old Man's bones, hours of free entertainment
10) If I'm really pushed, I might even do some housework. It has to be pretty desperate though.

Heh... Oh, procrastinating is my specialty.

1) Daily routine of forum trolling. Check in this order: WoW guild forums, private critique forums, Tribal Wars, AbsoluteWrite. SFF UK forums optional.
2) Daily reply pattern. Type long-winded answers for threads from above sites.
3) Check the news. Daily Mail, CNN, news.com.au, etc etc.
4) Check e-mail. Maybe even reply to someone. *gasp!*
5) Chat for hours on end in private chatroom. Pop in on AW chat occassionally.
6) Play WoW (World of Warcraft).
7) Read a book.
8) Clean the house after a sudden realization that we've been there for almost a month and haven't unpacked much.
9) Get frustrated because I haven't been working on my revisions, then pick up a notebook and begin writing something entirely unrelated. Or post a challenge topic for SFF SYW, also unrelated.
10) Repeat cycle.
