Oh, why didn't I listen? Why didn't I listen?

H Conn warned us, right up front, but no. I knew better. I thought I could look. Thought I could handle whatever I saw. I just had to open it. Had to see the first message with the stacked emoticons. But was that enough? No! I had to scroll through them all. And I... SAW THEM!

I'll never be the same. Never.

You know, by telling people a thread is not for them, you instantly make them WANT to read it. Good tactic. Maybe I'll try that with editors. Hmm.

Dear Editor:

My 100,000-word techno-thriller The Da Vinci Code is not for you. You should never read it. If you do read it I can't be responsible for how you react to it.

However, just in case you're curious, here's the synopsis.
....

Sincerely,

:Lecture: That totally works!:) I sent lots of 'first three chapters' things when my book was called something lame. No bites. Seeing as it was in diary form, I changed the name to 'Private-DO NOT READ' and I got some positive feedback and an agent to boot. In the end no one published it, but hey, at least they read the damn thing!:hooray:

I love this one, this is me.

Great, Nivvie and Maestro! That's the spirit.

I was really just thinking I'd put something clever or intriguing in the Subject Line of an e-mail query. Like: DO NOT READ THIS, DO NOT OPEN,
SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MATERIAL, MUST BE 18 OR OLDER TO VIEW, and of course THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.

The curiosity factor ought to be in high gear.
But of course, all they'd really get is my nice, tame, well-written query.

On the other hand, they might just think it's junk mail and delete it first.

Oh, the things we do to keep our kids occupied and interested while we write!

I don't know how moms and dads got anything written before TV. I know that was my fallback when my own kids were small. The Muse arrives, in goes the VHS tape. (And up goes the guilt.)

What? Kids in olden times played outside???

Maryn, whose kids rarely did

Nivvie

I think my mother believed that we were air-deficient as I was permantently shooed out for 'fresh air'. And she didn't believe in television. I basically slept indoors but that was about it.
I can feel myself turning into her and quite frankly it's scary.

I once read about Shirley Jackson and that she basically had a load of kids and they amused after each other and were forbidden from disturbing her in her writing room.

Damn, I need one of those.
And I want it sound proofed.

Nivvie, do I know your mother? My daughter likes to remind me that I'd send her and her brothers outside to play and get some vitamin D (from the sun). Not so I could write, I didn't write much then, but to save my sanity. It didn't work however, I'm completely bonkers. Ask anyone who knows me.
