I was reading over the Pet Peeves thread, getting bummed out, thinking we all have things that drive us crazy.

So in an effort to be more positive, I pose this question:

What makes you really happy? :Sun:

That's easy. My grandchildren!!! Love, love, LOVE those blonde haired, blue-eyed, into-everything little bits! *insert huge sappy sigh*

There are other things, too....living in the country, trees, feeding the wild birds, watching hummingbirds, the deer that come right up to our porch, rabbits and squirrels, music, reading, writing, painting, walking, my parrots, my dog, so many things. But I don't like snakes. ewwww.

Babies, children, women, fishing, baseball, acceptance letters, cheques, (positive) mail from readers, giving and getting rep points, Lucy my parrot, kittens and puppies, smelling a bakery, goofing with friends on or offline and sipping a Rusty Nail in front of a fire with a woman who winks at me and who doesn't have something stuck in her eye.

squirrels, chocolate, singing loudly (and often badly) to music when no one else is around, finishing a good book, a really nice cup of tea, having a nap on the sofa with a nice warm blanket over me

will edit for more as I think of them

A baby's smile or laughter, the warmth of the sun on my skin, happy music, a good movie, good friends, a hug, someone calling me just to make sure I'm okay, an "out-of-the-blue" card, pets (and baby animals), a warm fire, the surprise look on someone's face when I give them something, lying in bed talking "afterwards", seeing my friends (either in person or online), a long drive with the top down in my convertible, seeing my byline, an out-of-town trip, watching someone I love sleep, having a good day writing...

So many things, so little time.

(and notice that I didn't contribute to the pee peeves thread. Life's too short. good thread, rhymegirl)

Smile

(Heard this somewhere else but it's true for me too.) Dogs riding in cars with their head out of the window -- ears and tongue flapping. Never fails to make me smile. :)

Oh, and chimps on bicyles. Cracks me up...

Finishing writing a book
A call from my college roommates
Theatres

My babies' laughter--they're in college, but they're still my babies
"Mr. Maryn's" frankly approving look anywhere south of my chin
The dignity of certain elderly people who've led hard lives
Getting carded buying wine or beer
First-rate standup comedy that holds no subject off-limits
Any election that goes my way, from town council to Oscars
Snow outside, fireplace and popcorn and rented movie and family inside
My friends' successes, both personal and professional
Emperor penguin chicks, possibly the cutest animal around
The garage telling me there's no charge, fixing the car only took a minute
Making that crabby employee at the deli laugh
A writer saying my critique or brainstorming really helped
A book that makes me laugh, or cry, or gasp, and sigh when it's over
A bra that really fits (stolen from Jenna)
My daughter dating really cute guys who think she's beautiful even though she doesn't think so herself
People thinking my son is dark, mysterious, or rebellious based on his appearance, then finding out he's smart and fairly silly
Fixing it myself, whatever 'it' is
Being able to stop escalating disagreements at other forums, sometimes
Distracting a crying toddler in line at the grocery store check out--my peek-a-boo skills remain intact only through frequent use
Many people at this site who are clever, helpful, thrifty, and irreverent

My neice. (Got to spend time with her yesterday.)
My nephew. (Will spend time with him today.)
My family.
Hearing someone say "I love you" and knowing they mean it.
Having no transcription to do.
Music.
My Paris pictures.
Crafting.
Finishing something I've been working on, whether it be beady, jewelry, or writing.
The smell of baking bread.

I could add more, but I've got to get back to the transcription.

Seeing the guy, who I recognize as the one who cut me off for no reason and is now at the side of the road when I catch up to him, give his undivided attention to a cop for whatever it was that got him pulled over. Priceless. ;)

Rhymegirl, sorry the pet peeve thread bummed you out. :Hug2:

It’s a research project I’ve been working on for quite some time, with hopes that the end result will be a guide to help people to not worry about the “little” things.

What makes me smile or makes me happy:

Your thread--what makes you happy?
Seeing the bright innocent eyes of my granddaughter.
Knowing within a few weeks I’ll be a grandmother for the second time.
When my daughters say, “now I understand what you meant when you said…”
When my mother smiles at me.
When I think of my dad.
Spring and the first crocus’ blooming.
Waterfalls.
Campfires.

The silly face my shepherd makes when he stretches.
My 5 year old's no-holds-bar gut laughter at a silly joke.
Hearing my 9 year old's entire day recapped, play by play, when I pick him up from school.
Hubby kissing my neck after over a decade together.
Conversations about life with my mom.
Phones... Even though my sisters are thousands of miles away, we're still only a phone call away.
Hearing my nieces/nephew say "Hello Auntie."
As previously mentioned by Jenna and Maryn, that perfectly fitting bra.
An obvious once-over from a cute guy at the convenience store. (hey, I'm married, not dead.)
Coming home to hubby after being checked out at said convienience store.
The Water Cooler and the faboo people in it.

Hmm, based on the responses so far, it looks like it's much easier to find things that make a woman happy than a man. How is it they're so bad at it?

Maryn, ducking

Nice lists everybody! I didn't realize the Pet Peeves thread was part of a project. But yeah, if it makes people realize they shouldn't sweat the small stuff, I guess that's a good thing.

What's nice to find out is when I went to make a list of what makes me happy, the good things far outweigh the bad.

MATERIAL HAPPY THINGS:

*CHOCOLATE!!! (If they stop making it, that's the end of me)
*Peanut butter (Ditto)
*Selling my writing (I.e. A check in the mail.)
*A writing assignment
*Working on my novel and all the words come together right
*Good movies, especially funny ones
*Going out to a nice restaurant and having something delicious
*Okay, food in general

NON-MATERIAL THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE:

*Swinging on a swing like a little kid
*Riding a bike on a fall day with the wind blowing through my hair
*When one of my kids says: "I love you" or "Thanks, Mom" or
"I just cleaned my room"---Priceless!
*When my husband says, "I love you"
*A baby's smile
*Children's laughter and innocence
*Talking and laughing with a good friend
*Getting together with my sisters
*Reading the funny posts on AW
*A bright, sunny day like today

Hmmm...I wonder if this would make a good article idea??

Good things do outweigh the bad if one convinces the mind to lean that way.

Can't hurt to try working your happy information into an article.

Here's a few more:

Puppies, kittens, newborns of any kind.
Robins--sign of Spring.
Visiting nursing home patients and seeing the smiles on patients who never get visitors.
Giving a gift just for the sake of giving.

My mentally challenged Dalmatian named Sparky
My son William
My wife's 25 pound cat named Shadow
Sometimes my wife Kelli

Being able to bring a smile to a child's face in an otherwise bad situation always makes me smile.
