In the manner of many two-name newspapers (New Orleans' Times-Picayune, St. Louis' Post Dispatch), the Democrat & Chronicle was formed by the merging of the city's two morning dailies, the Democrat and the Chronicle. Ten years ago, more or less, they absorbed the afternoon daily, the Times Union (itself a merged-name paper) but opted not to turn themselves into the Democrat & Chronicle-Times Union.
