I don't have an agent and I'm thinking about the submission process for a full length B&W graphic novel on the subject of humor. It's a book that describes the many concepts of comedy. Right now, I'm eyeing Fantagraphics and Andrews McMeel. What other major publishers should I consider that are potentially the most appropriate and the most lucrative? Does the bigger publisher offer the better the contract?

On the contract side, I often read non-established creators such as myself, royalties range from 4-10% and advances range from $15,000-$35,000. Yet, I've also read that for comic book publishers, royalties are often split %50-%50. Which is the standard? I don't know much about royalties or what's a cover price or net price or if it covers reprints. Could someone explain what they are and which is preferred? How many copies of such books usually go into print? Has anyone ever negotiated forgoing an advance in favor of higher royalties?
