Taking a break from writing and thought I'd post something ... like some questions!

Questions:
1. How many words do you usually write a day?

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

4. How many times to revise it?

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

My answers:
1. Depends, sometimes I write two thousand or so, sometimes I write five hundred. On an average, I'd say around 750-1000.

2. Umm, well. The only complete thing I've ever written took four months, so I'll say around there.

3. Longest: 4 months. Shortest: 4 months.

4. I didn't actually revise it, so I wouldn't know ... :(

5. So far, one. But I'm making my way to the second! :)

How 'bout you?

Juneafternoon,

Has your ability grown since your first MS?

I heart questions!

1. I write about 5K a day, more if I'm in a zone.

2. My first MS took me a little under three months, but this one has taken so much more, a ton of research.

3. Wow! Around three dang years!!

4. I've made two major revisions. One for length, chopping it in half and the other was more of what I wanted.

5. Working on my second MS and I really know what I am doing. The 1st, people just thought me to be a natural, but I had no clue what I was doing, I never wrote a day in my life before, but this time, I know what I can do is not a one-off fluke.

Juneafternoon,

Has your ability grown since your first MS?
Well, see, my first MS was a fanfiction thing. I do count it as a completed story because I didn't keep the characters of the original novel the same at all and I really liked the plot. I think I did grow, which is why I'm trying to write original fiction. I started my WIP #1 and got to 55k before hitting a wall, then tried WIP #2 and also hit a wall. My problem was that I didn't know the characters I made up too well. So now, to practice, I'm writing a story about my friends and I a while ago... which is WIP #3. :)

1. How many words do you usually write a day?
It depends on how much time I have but anywhere from 1,000 to about 5,000
2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?
Novels take several years. I've completed and sold one and I'm working on a second. Short stories take several months because I only write for a few days then let them 'cool', revise and continue.
3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?
Can't remember - including research, about 5 years for longest. Shortest probably a couple of hours.
4. How many times to revise it?
It varies. Sometimes only one or two times, sometimes too many to count. I revise as I go and then make further revisions once I'm finished.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?
Not sure. One full length novel and lots of shorter pieces.

55K is a lot -- even if you hit a wall. And you've got the eye to see where you need to make the adjustments.

After my 1st MS I didn't think I was cut out for this, but that's changed with a ton of time to think.

1. How many words do you usually write a day?
750-1000 on average, when I'm in the zone.

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?
3-4 months for 90-100K first draft. Then 5 months to revise!

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

3 months on a 120K MS was my shortest. Longest 5 months on a 80K word novel.

4. How many times to revise it?

Too many to count! At least 10. I have a methodology for each revision, once I'm done with the major stuff, I began again going thru for word choice changes, grammar, punctuation, etc. That could go on forever if I let it. Once I hit a revision where the only thing I'm doing is swapping words, then I know it's time to let it go.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?
I'm closing in on my 4th (should finish next week!!) All were 80-120K novels.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

1) Depends if I'm on deadline or not. I like to do about 2000 words a day.

2) I could do it in four months but I prefer six.

3) Depends on the type of manuscript. I actually wrote a 10K short story in one day because I forgot about until the day before it was due.

4) As many as it needs.

5) 10 novels, 3 computer books, 3 humor books, one comic strip, numerous comic books. (My latest comic: http://zudacomics.com/node/144)

Yeah it is, but it was all wrong and just a hell of a lot of fluff. I veered off course so much that it was impossible to get back. But it's all good, it'll get written eventually, I have no doubt about that. Just a matter of how long it'll be before I get to it! :D

Writing is such a freakin' emotional thing for me. Sometimes I look at what I wrote with the eyes of disdain itself and sometimes I think I'm not doing so bad. >.< What can I do though, little characters keep yappin' inside my head, it's the only way I can get 'em to zip at night.

1. How many words do you usually write a day?

First off:

I do not write in chapters.

I do not write to a set "hours per day"

I do not write to a set "words per day"

What I do is, I write small segments or scenes from my book. Say a conversation between two characters. Or maybe the description of a room. Something like that. I find this easier, because I can see a very clear beginning, middle, and end. Not the beginning, middle, and end of the entire book. Not the beginning, middle and end of the entire chapter. Just the beginning, middle, and end of that one scene, which in most cases is 2 to 4 paragraphs long or about 600 - 800 words.

I make it my goal to write three of these segmants each day.

One in the morning as soon as I wake up, before I even get out of bed.

One in the afternoon, when I get back in from taking my dog out for his daily walk.

One in the evening, last thing just before going to bed. It takes about 15 - 30 minutes for me to write each segment. Or about 40 minutes to an hour and a half each day. In the end I end up with about 2,750 words written at the end of the day. That is, if I actualy sit down and write at all! Some days it's just hard to get motivated to start writing.

Anyways, When you take it and break it down into tiny chunks like this, it seems like you haven't written very much at all, when in fact you have gone well above and beyond your word count goal.

Unfortunatly, though I try to do this every day, I often end up only doing this 2 or 3 days a week. I have had months where I suprised myself and write like this every single day, but I seem to have a hard time sticking with writing EVERY DAY, which is my goal.
2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?

novel first draft:... I've done 2 in 30 days or less (30 days or less for each one that is, not 2 in one month)... one was 183,000 words the other was 75,000 words. Both were written on a dare and required lots of editing afterwards; much more editing than they would have needed had I written them in say 3 months each instead of 30 days each. From that I learned that the faster I write the more mistakes I make, so I'll stick with slow and steady from now on.

those are not average for me though, 'cause usually it takes me 4 or 5 or more months to get that much done. My average is prob'ly closer to 6 months per book, not including editing time.

short story first draft:... depends on the length of the story. 2 or 3 hours for every 1,000 or so words.

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

longest: about 12 years
shortest: 183,000 words in 30 day days

My quickest time ever was in October 2007 when I raced myself against the clock and wrote an 11,500 word short story in one 5 hour sitting, but boy did my hand hurt afterwards. I don't plan on ever trying to type a story by a time clock ever again! I just wanted to prove to myself that I COULD type fast if I really tried, but now that I'm happy with the fact that I could do it if I tried, I just continue to type at a slow pace because I've learned that "slow and steady wins the race" while fast and furious just hurts my hand.

4. How many times to revise it?

depends on what I'm writing, but rarely more than twice

the editing process for me, takes about 2 moths per revision, so editing twice adds another 4 months to each project

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

novels and novellas: uhm... no idea; about 30ish, I aim for at least one per year, while striveing for 2 per year
short stories: again, no idea... about 200+; I strive for at least one per month

1. How many words do you usually write a day?
At least 1,000 but I have written as much as 15,000 in one day.

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?
Almost done my first novel, after 7 years of not taking it seriously and one year of serious work. I estimate that my next novel will take a year to complete.

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?
Longest, 8 years. Shortest, 5,000 word short story that I wrote and edited in one day.

4. How many times to revise it?
I think 3 drafts is about right.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?
1.5 novels
12 short stories

question procrastination fun! yay!!

1. How many words do you usually write a day?

Varies. When I'm writing, I'll get around 2K/day, sometimes peaking at 10,000. Then I'll go for like a week writing nothing.

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?

Usually I don't finish, because I'm a perfectionist and keep restarting. Current WIP was begun like 5 years ago.

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

Longest: 5 years and counting. Shortest: 3 days. Full (tho short) novel. Completely horrible.

4. How many times to revise it?

I kind of combine the revising and first draft steps. Probably the reason I'm still on the same WIP after 5 years.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

Five, I think, plus the WIP
.

Questions:
1. How many words do you usually write a day?

When I actually sit down and write (which hasn't been as often as I'd like lately), I write between 1,500 and 3,000 words. The most I've ever done in a day was about 20,000.

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?

Far too long, because I go long stretches without writing. But when I sit my butt down and do it, I can pound out a first draft in about 6-8 weeks.

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

Probably a couple of years.

4. How many times to revise it?

I'm on the 4th rewrite, if that tells you anything. LOL (ANd when I say rewrite, I mean massive plot overhaul rewrite)

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

I've completed 2 drafts of my current book, so...2.

1. How many words do you usually write a day?

I don't have an average, because I don't write every single day. It just isn't always possible. As long as I know I'm making weekly progress, I'm happy.

When I sit down to write, I can do anywhere from 500 to 3500 words a day. Depends on how many hours I have available that day. My all-time best word count for a single day stands at 10,500 words.

2. How long does it usually take you to complete one of your WIPs?

Novels take about 2-3 months now, from first word to last.

3. What's the longest time you've worked on a completed MS? Shortest?

My longest was five years. My shortest was seven weeks (I've only done about two hours of revisions on this one, because it's a sequel to a book that hasn't sold, so I'm letting it rest until it's needed).

4. How many times to revise it?

Depends on what you mean by revise, I think. My first novel took five years to get right, because I kept going back and changing it. I've rewritten the first chapter at least six times. I've cut entire chapters, reworded scenes, altered characters, changed the structure, changed up the entire timeline. This novel took many, many hard revisions. More than any other book I've written.

Generally, once I've finished a manuscript, I'll go through it and do a general polish. Looking for continuity errors, facts and worldbuilding that may have changed over the course of the story, character names that have inadvertantly changed on me, glaring errors.

Once in a while, I'll do a major overhaul. Three books ago, I decided to change the reveal of the villain. It required going back and leaving different clues, different red herrings, and rewriting the last two chapters. Lots of work. I different book required that I completely omit one supporting character.

So revising can take anywhere from a few hours to many weeks, depending on how much work is needed.

5. How many manuscripts have you written?

Novels: Seven of my own, three co-written.
Screenplays: Three
Novellas: One
Short Stories/Flash: Eight.
