It is a large article but very interesting. :)

No one knew it, but the fiddler standing against a bare wall outside the Metro in an indoor arcade at the top of the escalators was one of the finest classical musicians in the world, playing some of the most elegant music ever written on one of the most valuable violins ever made. His performance was arranged by The Washington Post as an experiment in context, perception and priorities -- as well as an unblinking assessment of public taste: In a banal setting at an inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?

I recall the article when it first came out. But what does it mean?

It addresses whether art is still considered art when it isn't in the context of an artistic environment, or when it isn't recognized by the intended audience.

Could it be, in part, that it is the context one encounters the work in that confers the quality of being a work of art?

The article seems to jump on Kant while ignoring Hume. I think one could argue a good case against the merit of aesthetics based on this study.

Or does it come down to what are your priorities? Do we get to work late after enjoying a gorgeous piece of music then our boss gets on our case for being late, threatens, curses--effectively ruining that memory of great art? Or are we better off carving out a chunk of time, paying for aticket, go to a concert and hear someone in a relaxed, open setting where we can give our attention too?
