I just completed a short story, now ready to submit. Mag says you can submit on line or hard copy.

I was going to submit online AND send a hard copy as backup...

The rules state "No group entries". What exactly does this mean? Does it mean I can only do one or the other?

ETA: Sorry if I've put this question in wrong place, feel free to move, mods.

Thanks

Bumping gentle and also ETA: The magazine rules say they own all submissions. Does this mean even if you don't win, you never own your story again?

thank you

Try submitting your story on SYW. And if you want to ask a question regarding this forum, I think you should go to the FAQ's thread.

What does SYW have to do with my submit questions--reaches for more caffeine.

Mods, can you please move this to correct spot, if so needed.

thanks

Kimmi - I think what they might mean is not to submit multiple submissions under one entry fee/entry form. Can you drop them an email and ask for a clarification? It may be that they don't realize that sentence is unclear.

Kimmi, don't submit both online and hard copy. Choose one and send it. Otherwise, you're just adding to their slush pile by submitting the same story twice.

Ahh, no they only have a little box to copy paste your story. Looked for a place...just wanting to back up with hard copy via mail, but I don't understand the group thing :D. Also worried about them owning story if it didn't win, because I'd like to keep it--turn it into a longer fiction piece if it does nothing in contest.

thanks sweetie!

Ohh, okay Lori, thanks! Wonder about that ownership thing, Lori--It's Hearst Corp?

Kimmi, is this a contest? Because that sounds like an exceedingly odd thing to say about submissions . . .

If it's a contest, you should definitely e-mail to ask if you'll be able to use your story for something else if you don't win. I think (don't quote me, though) that's a cover-our-butts rule for contests.

And, good luck! :)

yes it is a contest for large mag. I'm worried because as usual, I pressed the button, sumbitted online than scouged the details, and came across sentence "they own all submissions." If I didn't win, I'd like to turn into novel and give to my agent.

Arghh, I'm so impatient.

thank you and merry holiday! You too Lori, Linda and Blue!

Oh, kimmi, I hate that "they own all submissions." Geez. Bet it was in tiny, tiny font, too. Maybe you can take back the ms. somehow? Anyone know how this could be done? Or, if you can't, and you don't win (now, that would be a shame! Their loss. :) ) you could take the story and change it enough where you could turn it into a novel.

Without seeing the exact wording, I could answer that question, Kimmi. It does give me pause, though.
Can I pm that link, Lori.

stormie, thanks, I don't know and I heart the story as it was original in poem, then moved it forward. My ignorance though, I'll probably have to accept.

Why don't you post it here? I can't guarantee I'll have time to look at it and there's many knowledgeable people who might be around to weigh in.

I ain't no expert, kimmi, but it looks like they've got the right to do whatever they want with entries - including collecting them all into a book and publishing it without paying the 'contributors'.

kimmi, is this for the Ladies Home Journal short story contest? I was thinking of entering until I saw the rules. I think that "no group entries" means no stories written by multiple people (like a single story written by a writing class).

My read: if you submit your story, they own it. Also, if you submit, they can use the story, your name, your photograph, and other information of yours for their own promotions without compensating you. You agree not to sue them for anything involving ownership or publicity of your story. You also agree to let them put you on their mailing list so that you can get junk mail from them and anyone else they sell their mailing list to.

Too many strings attached for me.

A snippet:
Except where prohibited by law: (i) submission constitutes permission to use the winners" entries, stories, name, hometown, voice, likeness, photograph, and any statements regarding this contest for editorial, public relations, promotional and advertising purposes on behalf of Sponsor without compensation; (ii) winners agree to assign all rights, title and interest, including copyright rights to Sponsor and agree to complete an Affidavit of Eligibility/Ownership, Release of Liability/ Publicity and Copyright Assignment within ten (10) days of notification, or the entry with the next highest scoring may become the alternate winner.

Reading those things you posted, to me it seems clear that it only refers to winners. Both sections start with a clear reference to winning entries. If you lose, your story is yours. All those things refer only to winning entries.
