Independent films

I dunno. One could say that corporate studios have figured out how to market to the indie crowd. After Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite, they figured out where the money is. That's why Juno is getting so much talk - the studios figured out how to take an indie film, get it as much talk as a major film, but keep people thinking, "It's so cool that it's indie, movies are so much better when the studios don't get involved to just make a bunch of money."

Of course, Juno is going to make a bunch of money. A lot.

The major studios certainly don't underrate independent films. However, I do think that they have figured out the formula and they're about to start mass-producing them.

Also, don't Stephen King films get universally trashed by critics? Except for Shawshank?

Anybody have a feeling this thread is more like: what do you like and what do you not?

As for the indy film vs major studio movies:

When I went to see a small indy film at one of our indy movie theatres here in Toronto, all the trailers were of course for other small indy films. They all had the same kind of music, same kind of camera work, same kind of "aren't we so clever for the clever people who don't like blockbusters" kind of feel. Now I like indy movies. I also like big movies. This experience kind of showed me that really the indy crowd is pretty much the same as the major movie crowd, just with a different category of film. Sure you are more likely to see some truly original stuff with indy, but I'm finding a lot of "indy" stuff these days seems like they are cranking out the same old same old, just like with the big studios.

Quirky is really starting to get my goat.

Anybody have a feeling this thread is more like: what do you like and what do you not? .

It's a bit of that, sure, but I think most people do try to think about what/who are overrated or not. I like both studio and indies but I do think many people tend to ignore indie/art-house films in favor of big studio productions (let's see which movie will be box office #1 this week -- let me guess... National Treasure... which I'm going to see). When people say "what are you going to see this weekend" they tend to just know or list big studio films. How about are going to see National Treasure and how many even know if Juno is out?

Toothpaste
12-22-2007, 03:06 AM
Actually a lot of people know Juno is out, it's getting huge PR and mentions on all the major talk shows.

I do agree with you Maestro, I just get a bit annoyed at movie film buff wannabes. The kind of people who think "If it's indy it must be good". To me it's the same kind of mob mentality that helps make National Treasure the number one movie. Just a different group of people, and a bit of a smaller group at that.

lol, it's kind of like I was when i was a little girl, if I saw a black and white movie on tv, as a way of showing off I'd say, "Ooh this is going to be good!" When really, come on, tons of those old movies are utterly ridiculous!

Spiny Norman
12-22-2007, 04:01 AM
I live in Austin, which has a huge indie demographic. At least a dozen theaters around here focus exclusively in indie films. And it's hipster central, so you got to have indie love to go with the emo hair, plaid shirt, ballerina jeans and swallow tattoos.

I guess since I'm at ground zero for indie movies I can see that it's becoming less of an art form and more of a staple. I don't mind much, there's a lot of clever writing in these - Charlie Bartlett, yeah, that is engineered to be for the indie crowd, but it seems clever. On the other hand, can you ignore how it was engineered so you can appreciate the clever writing? Dunno.
