Saw this in the Freelancer section and immediately got jealous. I need a goal thread I can post in, dammit!

What's up for y'all in the coming year?

I'm feeling mighty cynical tonight so maybe I'll wait 'till I'm in a better mood to really think through more of my actual goals.

But I know that at least one goal for me will be to get my travel writing research proposal picked up by my college. God, that's going to be stressful.

Non-writing goals include hiking the Long Traiil in the spring and uh... some other stuff.

Share share share!

Much good luck with your goals, Dakota and hope '08 is a super year for you and eveyone. Hope you're in a better mood too! My goals for '08 are to get into higher paying markets and sell more greetings for greeting cards.

My goal is to give Evernight and Stargazer the best launches possible, to write both of the final two books in the series, and to get to work on new proposals.

And to be in better health next year!

Mine aren't all that freelance-related either, so I'll post them here. I play this game on this board sometimes. I'm making a list of 12 things, and I'll do 12 of each.

Here they are:

1. Publish 12 features in national publications.
2. Write 12 personal essays.
3. Travel to 12 new-to-me places.
4. Discover 12 new things to do or see in my home city.
5. Try 12 things that scare me or make me nervous.
6. Meet 12 people I know online in real life.
7. Discover 12 new authors.
8. Discover 12 new musicians.
9. Help 12 writers get closer to their dreams.
10. Take 12 conscious steps to advance my career.
11. Take 12 conscious steps to advance my personal life.
12. Cook 12 full meals (dessert included).

None.

None whatever.

Every "goal" I've set for writing over the past dozen years or so has wound up like ashes in my fireplace.

Frankly, after the first of the year, I don't have a clue what I'm going to do in regard to writing and the horrid ancillary things that accompany it.

My writing goal is like Claudia's: to give my book "Accordion Dreams" the best launch possible--and to move on to the next book.

Some of my personal/family goals are equally important: good health for all of us (especially one son, who is coming out of a rough year) and a more satisfying work situation for my husband.

Good luck to all of you!

Susan

Hmm. I hadn't really thought about it until now, but I guess these would be my goals for 2008:

~Get Avarae published
~Finish another few semesters at college with good grades
~Get my own apartment
~Help some other writers with their books
~Work on Avarae's second book
~Lose a few pounds/get back in shape
~Not sleep so much!!!

Good luck everyone!!!

I've got a humble writing goal:
Finish and sell 2 new short stories
Finish rewriting a short story and sell it too.

In my personal life, I have only one goal: Graduate from university.

In 2008, I'll write every day. New words. No quota -- new words every day.

In 2008, I'll work on the areas of writing I'm worst at, the ones I secretly hope every agent and editor will overlook (because they won't).

In 2008, I'll make 50 submissions. (Didn't quite get to 50 in '07, but I'll keep that number as my goal until I make it or until I get past "serious interest" with TSAF.)

In 2008, I'll stay active in WW, both at monthly meetings and with Books For Kids, and volunteer at the conference in August.

In 2008, I'll take my vacation at a different beach, and go at least one place I've never been before.

In 2008, I'll try to remember there's more to life than writing – at least once. :)

- Finish my WIP which is the concluding book of my series
- Write the killer new standalone book I'm planning and get it published
- Play more sports
- Focus on enjoying each day
- Other than that, business as usual. 2007 was a very good year.

My Writing Goals for 2008:

1. Don't miss any deadlines.

2. Finish first draft of Book Two before I go to Maui this summer.

3. Learn so much at Maui that my brains are ready to burst!;)

I have some others, but number one is the big one.

2) Finish writing draft 1 of WiP #2
3) Finish my master's degree (public health)
4) Redeploy safely and then get my happy ass out of the Army.
5) Apply to Law School
6) Get pregnant (in Paris)
7) Go see in person some of the castles I'm using for inspiration in my WIP
8) Hike the Bright Angel Trail through the Grand Canyon

-Write more poetry on my own time (I haven't written a single poem that I wasn't submitting for a grade).
-Submit more nonfiction and poetry, instead of just novels.
-Make great connections at my internship.
-Read much, much more, especially things related to what I write.
-WRITE WRITE WRITE!! I'd make more specific goals for this one, but my decisions of what to write tends to change daily. As long as I keep writing, I'm happy.

And not a goal, but more like a sincere wish: Get an agent :3

  7. Smile more!
  8. Fret less!

I really need to sit down and write these goals out. Why haven't I done this yet? Typically, I obsess over how my up coming year is going to go career-wise . . . this year, though, it hasn't crossed my mind. What's wrong with me??!!! I need to go to bed early tonight . . . something's seriously wrong.

Having just decided what my goals for 2008 will be, I decided to post them here and then I may feel committed to them.

I have to say, though, that my goal for 2007 was to find an agent, and that didn't happen, so I have decided to be a little more abstract this year.

1) I will keep the finished crime novel (DEATH SCENE) out on submission at all times.
2) I will aim to write 3500 words a week (which is 500 words a day, but for me the weekly tally seems easier to reach than the daily one, somehow).
3) I will get back to work on the new supernatural crime novel (which has somehow fallen by the wayside) and keep it as 2008's WIP.

My goals are the same as Moon Daughters!

My goal is to finish my first big MS early in the year, then revise the crap out of it hopefully getting it ready for a submission by the end of the year.

I also want to write and publish a few short stories this year as well.

* Finish the second book in my series. (and title it)
* Make progress on, or even finish, my historical fiction novel
* Get a good start on the third book in my SF series (believe it or not, I DO have a title for Book 3 already).
* Be able to speak Cebuano (and possibly Tagalog) with at least a decent degree of skill. (I'm gaining on it)
