Birds and migration patterns

Okay I'm dating myself, but when I was a kid in the DC area, every autumn, there would be vast flocks of birds - honestly from horizon to horizon. I'd always get this little Alfred Hitchcock thrill and be glad that they stayed 'way up there'.

Fast forward thirty years, or even twenty and I just don't see migratory swarms like that. Not anywhere that I have lived. Not in ages. Are there just fewer birds or did they all simply go someplace else?

Yeah, we get plenty of geese. Even here in the mountains. I always think that's very cool.
