mother led me on tiptoe heels
through delicate cascades
of sore-red poppies
i followed, small, singly,
sketching penguins
the valley mist sat
soft, close, remote
like the dawn dew on my window

i watched
wondering whether
we would ever
must ever
speak
and smudge
the watercolour stillness

i closed the penguins
on themselves
and a stolen poppy

she watched closely
not a still life
only broken pieces
yesterday's dream fragments
rearranged by this
master

suddenly
she found herself
captured thusly within
a painting hung
her new home
a gallery wall

she wasn't sure
did she become
just an object
or
did the object
become her?

One shard at a time
I collect the broken pieces,
shattered hearts, thorn pierced
and just a lingering shadow
echoes in a dark hall
leading me forward,
searching for merciful justice.

She sits awhile
To contemplate the sound

Of butterfly wings
Distant rain
And Alexander’s band


(Alexander's band is the technical term for the arc of clear sky between the two rainbows)

Cadair Idris means "the chair of Idris" in Welsh. Idris was a giant in Welsh mythology and the chair refers to one of the the mountain's glacial lakes, Cwm Cau resembling an enormous armchair.

Eon ago
a giant taken
by madness in his poetry
his house of rock
cursed and versed
and kicked into endless water
still sits a chair
upon a dare
to stay the night of hauntings
and suffer hence
prosaic sense
or death
to whom
is brave to slumber

each note into the sky
