View Full Version : How easy is it to get a ring made smaller?

I just bought a big fat gorgeous square jade ring off of ebay. Turns out it's slightly too large for my finger. I know it's fairly easy to get a ring made larger, but what about smaller? I have no idea how this is accomplished. Anyone have any idea how much this would cost? I don't want to go into the jeweler and look like a total cheapskate for refusing if the price is too much. (I can live with it for a while until I save my pennies up.)

You said jade, but I'm assuming the band is metal? If it is, then I believe the only way to make it smaller is for the jeweller to cut some of the metal away and solder it closed.

The quick way to shrink a ring is to put tape on the inside.

Oh yeah, sorry-- the stone is jade, the setting is 14K gold.

I thought the quick method was to eat more and make your finger fatter...

Nah - they can make it smaller - I wear a 5 1/2 ring - I always have to have them sized down. Fortunately, my SIL is a jeweler :D

Actually, PEOPLE WHO WISH ME TO GET FAT FINGERS, I was quite pleased to find that my knuckle was not as big as I thought it was. That's my real problem: the knuckles. I could gain 20 pounds and they'd still be bigger than my fingers. Thanks for that, mom.

How about a ring guard? They work very well and not expensive. Beautiful ring, Jo. But I like the idea about fattening up with chocolate.:)

Susie, you are brilliant. A ring guard is the perfect solution.

Psst, don't tell anyone but it's actually a Green Lantern ring.
