I originally wrote my fantasy novel in english, even though I'm Icelandic, in order to reach more readers. I've had no luck getting an agent but now a local publisher is showing interest in a translated sample of my work. I'm wondering, if I do manage to publish it in Iceland and it does well, will I encounter any major difficulties in getting the english version published abroad? Are there any specific rules regarding such publishing that I should be aware of?

This is something you'll need to work out with the Icelandic publisher, depending on what rights it wants to buy from you. You will need to hold onto foreign and translation rights in the countries where you want to try and sell it.
