A fellow Superauthor is holding a huge on-line charity auction to raise money for juvenile diabetes research, and she's managed to secure reads with a good number of romance editors and agents. You can bid on the chance to have your work read by:

Wendy McCurdy, The Bantam Dell Publishing Group, Random House
Brenda Chin, Associate Senior Editor, Harlequin Blaze
Leslie Wainger, Executive Editor, Author Development, Harlequin Enterprises

Ethan Ellenberg of Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency
Lucienne Diver of Spectrum Literary Agency

Natasha Kern, Natasha Kern Literary Agency (rated 11th in the list of top 25 literary agencies for new writers by Writers' Digest in its March 2003 issue)

Good things can come through things like this. It allows you to by-pass needing an agent (with some of the editors) and the slush-pile (for either an agent or an editor.) It's just another alternative way to get your work in front of them and I thought there might be someone here interested in it.

Do you think the bids will go really high? I know it's for a great cause, and it's a great chance for an editor to see my work, but I'm no millionaire....

(sigh)

Jana, I have absolutely no CLUE how high they'll go.

Have you considered entering one of the many RWA contests? That's also another way to get in front of an editor. (Of course, you want to look for a contest that has an editor you'd like to read your stuff as a final round judge, and you have to cross your fingers that you make it to the final round... but still, it's another option.)

Contest entry fees usually run around $20.00 - plus your postage fees and whatever it costs you to print out your entries.
