My college has a visiting writer's program, where we have at least one published author come a month and give lectures, sit in on classes, and give a reading. They select one or two writing students to be the opening act for the reading, and for this month, I was one of them!

I'm really excited because I'm only a sophomore and they usually ask juniors and seniors to do this, so it probably means I'm good at writing, lol. I usually write longer works, so I condensed the first chapter of a novel I've been tooling around with for awhile as a standalone piece. I just found out the writer, Angela Balcita, is actually an essayist, which makes me wish I'd prepared an essay instead of a short story, but as the reading's on Thursday and I've been working on this story since school began, it seems a little late to write something else. Still I'm very excited.
